I'm guessing most people here stopped by their local shops for FREE COMIC BOOK DAY. I've read a few that I picked up so far. They really are a mixed bag.
I didn't pick up S/B #1, because I already have the original. But I really do think this was a great comic for DC to sample.
The good (that I read so far):
The Perposterous Voyages of Ironhide Tom--from a little-known publisher, this book was pretty good, and had a very unique sense of humor.
The okay:
Bongo Comics Sample--Nothing bad about this book, just nothing great.
The bad:
Justice League Unlimited: Why does it seems like all comics based on animated action cartoons are BAD, even when the show it's based on is really good.
Star Wars/Conan flip book: Pretty bad. The Clone Trooper story was pretty stupid. Conan wasn't that great either.
I still have some more books like Mr. Jean (which looks pretty good), keenspot best, and so on. What did you guys think of the FCBD books?

I completely missed it. I and the missus went to a Derby party (c'mon, it's Kentucky) out of town and I didn't get a single free comic. But I won my Derby bet!

The comic shop that I live near had none because (and this is a quote from the store manager): The owner is too damn lazy & greedy. He doesn't believe in free stuff and couldn't be bothered.
The shop I usually go to in Redlands held some for me... too bad the Star Wars book is lame.

That's a shame, Scott. It's like a big, free promotion for his store and he can't be bothered? Pfeh.
I haven't read a whole lot of the Star Wars from Dark Horse but what I have I just haven't gotten in to. It seems they are really trying to get the quality up and do interesting things but it all just comes off like bad fan fic.

Some Star Wars stuff is okay; the Leia arc of ''Empire'' was pretty entertaining, as was most of ''Republic'' (although the Quinlan Vos stuff got boring after a while).

I stopped by mine and it was really nice. They had a large selection of free books. My kids all got three a piece. I dropped off some more flyers for this site, and spoke with three different local writers and artists who were selling and signing their books. They said they would drop by and check us out. I didn't pick up anything free. I ended up buying some more boards and a Young Justice tpb.

My local CBS had a huge sale in conjunction with FCBD. The place was jam-packed, and there was even a news-crew there (?!?); in fact, I was taped bringing my box-full of comics to the register (I turned and smiled for the camera, then watched myself on the 6 o'clock news).
My comic shop rules (POP! Comics and Games, in Sarasota--- RomansEmpire may know it as he used to live in the area).
I bought about 60 back issues for $40, and really got some gems!
* A complete run of the Marv Wolfman/Gene Colan Night Force title from the 80's * The Prestige format nine-issue Flash Gordon mini series from the 90's * The last few issues of the original Flash run, just before COIE * Some Doc Savage issues * Some JLAs from the satelitte era (I now have an almost complete run from about 190-240)
And I'm going back today to get the Golden Age Flash action figure (to complete my GA set of Hawkman, GL and Captain Marvel).
The only free comic I was interested in was the Dark Horse Conan/Star Wars issue (for the original Tim Truman Conan short story).
Plus, I bought a blue, long-sleeve t-shirt, with the insignia of a science officer from Star Trek: TOS!--- for $3!
I say again: POP! Comics rules (and the owner and staff are first class)!
All-in-all, a very satisfying FCBD!

I'm jealous!
The only thing cool that happened at my shop (though I couldn't get to it) were members of the 501st legion were there.

My LCS did pretty well. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen it so busy. The store was filled with lots of children and their parents, not only getting free comics, but purchasing comics as well. I saw of lot of parents buying Marvel Essentials and DC Showcase Presents for their children, obviously for the amount of comics you get for the amount of money.
I picked up free copies of Queen & Country and Justice League Unlimited. The Queen & Country is from a few years ago, because the back of the book states that Free Comic Book Day is May 4. I haven't got around to reading either of the comics, but I hear good things about Queen & Country.
Also, Dan Adkins was at the store and I got him to sign a copy of Detective Comics #493 that he inked. I talked to him for a little and he seemed like a really nice guy.
Everyone at the store seemed to be in good spirits and having fun. I wish it was like that more often.

Actually, I found out that the books aren't REALLY free: the owners of the store have to pay for each and every FCBD book they order, so maybe this guy doesn't have the budget to blow on something like that -- at my store, he limits the copies to 2-3 per person for that reason. And the only other bonus I got that day was Nilla Wafers...but they were yummy! ;D As for what I got, I picked up Superman/Batman (it would be nice if DC gave us something besides #1 reprints ), Star Wars/Conan (which I liked, but mostly for the Conan), a Image sampler called Future Shock (boring!), Owly from Top Shelf (a really cute book, great for kids! ), and a classice Donald Duck from Gemstone Publishing (between this and last years' Uncle Scrooge, I'm actually beginning to like Disney comics again!).

Ha! My youngest son (4) picked up the Donald Duck. I haven't had a chance to look it over yet, but I love disney comics. Those and Archie's. Of course I remember back when they were really popular too. *sighs*

Cool! Sounds like everyone had a great time. The 501st usually do our FCBD too. Nice guys. Dave: If that's the Flash Gordon series I'm thinking of, I have a few issues of that and it was a really well done run! Great find!

A group of well equipped Star Wars geeks that have their own Stormtrooper/Vader/Imperial officer/Fett costumes. Pretty much anytime you see a guy in an accurate Stormtrooper getup, he belongs to the 501st Legion. They do charity events, FCBD, conventions, movie premieres. They're all really cool guys. They even have an Elvis trooper. You can check them out at: www.501st.com/default.htmlMake sure you look at the member gallery!

There were only about 3 501st members at my shop (1 Stormtrooper, 1 Bike Trooper, and a Boba Fett).
Just something I was wondering: What's the policy at your stores about FREE COMIC BOOK DAY? At mine, they allow you to take every free issue, but only one copy of each. However, I think some other stores do it a bit differently.

The only way I got two is because my sister went with me and gave me her free comic (She doesn't like nor read comics, but she went with me because she knows I do, and thought it would be nice to get me an extra comic).

Two free comics, and two with every £5 spent... And they're getting another batch of the free comics this week!
