I vote for Hawkman.
He was chairman of the JSA for like 40 years!
When he came back a few years ago, they were all ready to give it up to him again, and he actually took over for the Black Reign x-over when the team invaded Kahndaq--- and then, when the job was done, like Cincinnatus of old, relinquished the power peaceful.
That is a great leader--- and this is the Hawkman I will be bringing to the DC2, not the alive again/dead again Wolverine wanna-be that he's been in the last year or so (though I still hold that the best line in comics this year was after Batman sucker punched him in JLA over the whole mindwipe thing, and Carter was all like: "Hope it was worth it Bats, 'cause I'm about to give you ten minutes you'll never forget...!"--- God Bless Geoff Johns!).

I'm going with Martian Manhunter. If you really look at it, the guy has really been in charge all along. He has been in almost every incarnation of the JLA. Even when he is not team leader he tends to be the one orginizing and giving the orders. Everyone listens to him and will go along with his idea's. Where as it seems that Batman, Superman, and even Wonder Woman will be questioned, at times, on their idea's or strategies, J'onn just has to suggest something and off they all go.

I would have to second MM. There is a reason he has been a prominent figure in every incarnation of the Justice League.

Hal isn't a leader... Superman (both incarnations) is always trying to be a follower more than a leader... Martian Manhunter doens't want to lead, and is more of the heart of a team than the head... Nightwing is like Batman, and that isn't a good thing when it comes to leading. He doesn't care, but he has the stratergy down to a tee... Mr Terrific may be smart but he doesn't have the real experience to be 'the greatest' and Aquaman rules the seas, so he, n in theory, is the greatest leader.

I'm not sure I totally agree on your take of Nightwing, HoM. I think Dick does care, and that's what makes him and Batman different. Unfotunatley now they have him caring so much that he practically freezes at the first sign of trouble. Isn't that the reason why he left both the Titans and the Outsiders, because he couldn't take losing anymore team members?

i agree the little rascallion cares. but i think it is in between the two of yous guys' ideas. however the greatest leader bar none is Luthor. Think about it not only did he run the U.S. but he is running the Villains in crisis... BOTH OF THEM, and he ran his own company forever. sure he eventually ran it into the ground, but he ran it nonetheless. greatest leader of all time: who else BUT Lex Luthor?
ssshhh don't answer because there is none greater.

Martian Manhunter doens't want to lead, and is more of the heart of a team than the head... Ah yes the heart! But don't we all follow our heart then our head from time to time?

OK as far as Luthor goes:
One of the tell tale signs of a "GREAT LEADER" is the people that follow. Um, who followed Luthor that would make him great? No one!

At the moment, actually, there are a few people following both Luthors. Very interesting theory there, but in the end I think John is right. He really doesn't inspire like the others do.
sorry I broke the shhh rule...

what!?! you sir are clearly delusional. does the name deathstroke the terminator ring a bell? how bout the joker? that guy is begging to be lead by luthor. sides ther are not known as great because they are eclipsed by luthors brilliance. don't deny it. you had better be sorry! Luthor is number one. <shakes fist>

I honestly see where you are coming from and I think you have some valid points. I also think our Luthor is going to be the one (with the help of Joker and Black Adam) to bring down the others, but he's not my personal best. Still say MM.
mmmm M & M's.....

i still don't see how mm was a "leader" he never lead a JLA team really (cept detroit) and it seems like they always kinda use him, if not for his superman like abilities then for his telepathic links and whatnot.

|
Post by starlord on Nov 28, 2005 7:53:04 GMT -5
Well it's kind of hard for me to explain and maybe MM really is the "heart" of the group, but even though he has rarely been the leader, I find it funny that he's the one who is usually giving the orders when they are all connected via his telepathy. Perhaps I should amend my statement to say that MM is the greates DC leader that has never been. ;D

No, I am not sold on Luthor at all! The "bad guys" follow him? Deathstroke and Joker? They are loony tunes the lot of them! The problem is the JLA has never had strong leaders, just strong individuals. Maybe Hawkman from the JSA should get it. The JSA has always been a team where the JLA has always been a team-up book. But, Luthor has never led a team that has had any real success has he? HA and double HA!

That doesn't make him the greatest leader, that makes him the greatest dictator. I really see what your saying but I can't get behind the notion of Luthor and the word "great" with anything but maybe worlds greates threat. A true leader, leads by example, not by power and fear and intimidation. I mean even as President Luthor had his hands in a lot of evil crap. That's not a great leader.

wait great does not mean the same as noble or righteous. hitler was a great speaker, doesnt mean he was a great man. now if you want to pigeon hole the definition of "great" to meaning only leaders who did the right thing then i suggest the title not be the greatest leader (or rather gratest) because regardless of how, why, or where someone leads someone else, if they get them there then they are a leader no? luthor is a leader. just beause he is a bit wacked and leads people crazier then he does not mean hes not a leader or a motivator and just because he does not keep his hands "clean" does not mean he is not great at what he does. he is a uniter. he is a commander. he may be a tyrant sure, but he is a damn great leader.

LMAO! I knew that (gratest) was coming back to bite me in the butt sooner or later. ;D Oh alright, I love these kind of debates (understanding that they are just that, friendly debates) but I will concede that Luthor, by your definition, is a great leader. Not by my definition but by yours. and evilal, heh, heh, heh, I don't really talk politics because people tend to get a little over heated, but I'm sure you've caught my drift. This has been fun.

Well dictionary.com says:
Greatest: not to be surpassed; greatest in size of those under consideration; greatest in importance or degree or significance or achievement; highest in quality
Leader:One who is in charge or in command of others; One who has influence or power
So I guess that puts the Luthor part of this debate to rest!
