So I'm talking to a friend of mine this evening about Identity Crisis and the question was asked of me: "What would you have chosen to do, if you had been one of the JLA."
It stopped me in my tracks because my first response would not have been what my gut was telling me. Of course I wanted to say that there would be no way that I would have gone along with a mindwipe. There had to be another way. But my gut said that I might have. To protect my family, my children? Hell yes!
So I'm interested to know your thoughts on this. If it was real, if you were one of them, what would your decision have been...?

the price you pay for being a hero. i know your family shouldnt pay the price. but altering not only villains' minds but a teammates?!?! no, i wouldn't have done it, especially not in secret so the main guys don't hear about it. I would have had to say no.

When you out it this way I think I would have gone along with it.

I would be willing to erase a villains memory of who I am. I would be unwilling to change a villains personality and therefore change the person at their very core. I would be unwilling to wipe a teammates memory.

I'd change the villains personality totally... If they choose to hurt others, and they're there as a constant threat to innocents, then I'd make them vegetables, no problem.

I don't think I could mindwipe a fellow member. That really was going over the line, IMO.
Also, keep in mind, that their plan was not to lobotamize Dr. Light, just erase that memory. The rest was an accident.

When they're about to wipe Dr Light's mind, Hawkman asks if that'll be enough. "Maybe Zatanna can just... I don't know... clean him up a bit." That was no accident. That was what the vote on the satellite was about. "Making someone forget was one thing... but going in... trying to shift his personality -- even slightly..."

My bad, Doc. It's been quite awhile since I read it. My memory was that it was an accident. That really was going over the line.

When you attempt to change someone's personality you change the person and in someways wipe the other person out of existence. I would rather see a villain executed by the government then lobotomize him.

In my books, Superhero help the law, but they can't become judge, jury and executioner. That kind of mentality leads to lynch mobs.
And I'm not talking David Lynch mobs!

I don't see why the whole mind wiping thing was such a huge deal. They had no problem playing billiards with the White Martians' brains.

I think WW did what she had to do, don't get me wrong, but personally I don't know if I could have done it. Of course, then I think, "Yep, but if it had to do with my kids or my family, I know I could."

I don't know...it's a tricky subject. I think that Wonder Woman went WAY too far when she killed Lord; there were other alternatives and she refused to face the consequences afterwards. She condemned the entire Amazonian race when she snapped Max's neck. As for the mind-wiping...I would have done it to protect my family. But I wouldn't have hidden it, and I would have stopped her from doing the same to Batman.

So I'm interested to know your thoughts on this. If it was real, if you were one of them, what would your decision have been...? Depends which one of them I was. If I was Flash then, being a police scientist and working for a League with the word Justice in the title I'd get Zee to mindwipe the secret identities from Doc Light, and then make sure that he stood trial for the rape of Sue Dibny (Ralph and Sue's identities are public knowledge so that shouldn't be too impossible). If I was Zatanna then I'd be tempted to mindwipe the rape incident from Sue's mind. I'd also have no problem with changing Doc Light's personality to remove his evil nature. After all, it's just a simple variation on an old trick - any magician should be able to pull a habit out of a rat. If I was Green Arrow, I'd see what Hawkman said and then go for the opposite. When they suggested a vote I'd storm off the satellite moaning about how voting systems, by their very nature, persecute minorities. If I was Ralph, then my flexible hand would stretch through Doc Light's mouth, down his throat and then rip his insides out. If I was Black Canary, I'd ask Sue what she wanted to be done to Doc Light. If I was Hawkman, I'd see what Green Arrow said and then go for the opposite. Not sure what I'd do if I was Green Lantern or The Atom, so I'll just have to hope that that situation never arises.

If I was Zee I wouldn't have stopped with just a few people. I would have wiped the rest of the League and then made them all forget. And also give me money. And make me the Chairman. And probably some other bad things.
I wouldn't make a very good superhero.

...and there you have it folks!
How to take a thread from the moral implications of a good old fashioned mind wipe, and turn it into a discussion of cross-dressing, in just over fourty eight hours.
Take a bow, everyone...
LOL
