with inifinte crisis in full swing, the mini-series concept seems to be on my mind. with that being said, what is the best DC universe mini-series, crossover, or event that you have ever read? what's your hidden gem, a series that the common fan may not even know about?
for my mainstream pick, i'd have to go with cosmic odyssey by jim starlin and mike mignola. i know i've commented on it before, but i just can't get over how good this series really is. it was my first exposure to the new gods and the anti-life equation, and made me an instant fan of the tragic character of jon stewart.
a little bit off the beaten path, i would have to go with the brave and the bold from 1991. it was a mini-series starring green arrow, the question, and one of my favorite z-listers, the butcher. the story was a well written yarn by mike grell and mike baron and art by shea anton pensa is very decent for the time, and i've always thought it deserved more attention. pick it up.

I don't know if it's really the 'best', but Batman: Turning Points and Batman: Family both stand out for me.

i still have yet to get through the crisis on infinte earths trade in one sitting without falling asleep. as much as it is considered by most to be this absolute "must read", i just couldn't get into it. this may be because i did not get into dc comics until well after the crisis actually took place, and the thought of the mutiple realities really made everything more confusing than anything else. i sort of feel that way with infinte crisis now. i also feel bad for anyone thinking that this is a good "jumping on" point for new readers. I've done nothing but watch people in my friend's comic shop ask question after question after reading Infinite Crisis.
*gets off soap box*
*laughs*
sorry.
don't even get me started on watchmen...

Crisis was a great mini-series, but as a crossover event, I thought it was pretty messy. Even Marv Wolfman's series didn't synch up to Crisis properly. I missed a whole bunch of crossovers. Of the ones I did collect, I think Legends was perhaps the best executed. The premise was easy enough for every comic book to pick and run with it. Yet the simplicity didn't deminish the overall threat of the event. I liked how it ushered out one Justice League and forged a second. I liked the introduction of the Suicide Squad. The only part I thought felt was pushed too hard was WonderWoman's introduction. But George Perez and John Byrne were able to capitalize that chance meeting in the titles they were writing, which I though somewhat redeeemed the ackward appearance. Anyway... my 2 cents, and lack of sense.

Well as far as the big DCU crossover mini goes I really liked Invasion and Armageddon 2001 so call me crazy! I think they were the only legitimate stories that could span the whole DCU and work. As for a mini that is a gem or off the beaten path I would have to say: Haywire the 1988 series about the worlds most advanced battle suit and the mayhem that ensures after it falls into an average persons hands. It was the first "mature title" that I ever read(sex and violence oh my) and it was a blast. Yes cheesy at times and may not hold up as well by todays standards but it was a fun read. written by Michael Fleisher and art by Vince Giarrano. If you get a chance check it out. You can pick it up cheap on Ebay or the quarter bins at your local comic shop.

I read Haywire when it was released. It had some neat twists, but the art was kind of touch and go, IMO anyways. That might have been DC's first big Anime inspired mini-series. Is it just me, or did the last two issues seem really rushed?

This is really going back some, but does anyone remember the JLA/All-Star Squadron crossover from the early 80's that introduced Infinity, Inc? Probably my all time favorite x-over. Somebody should give Roy Thomas a job again at DC (he can have Judd Winnick's desk!)...

Is it just me, or did the last two issues seem really rushed? Yes the art was kinda touch and go especially the last issue. The big draw for me was the twists in the story that and the violence. I was seventeen in 1988 so what do you expect!

Ok, so I've started getting into the tbp now and have a couple of questions for you offcianato's (sp?). I was thinking of getting the Zero Hour - is it worth it? And which are the best Hal Jordan GL's to pick up. I started really reading DC after Hal was dead and just before he became the Specter so I would like to get the stuff that leads up to his breakdown and eventually Parallax. So can anyone give me the titles? Also just finished Animal Man volume 1 and thought Morrison did a great job on that. Hoping that there is a volume II out there. Oh and re-reading the GL/GA books of the seventies. Still great stuff if anyone is interested.

wait, has anyone mentioned watchmen yet? i just read it and it BLEW my mind. Yeah watchmen was a great series. When I heard that Moore wanted to use the Charleton Characters (Captain Atom/ Dr Manhattan; Blue Beetle/ OwlMan), I was disappointed that DC wouldn't allow it.

The reason they didn't allow it was because at the end of his series there was no way to continue with any of the characters in it!
