I think this event is going to be a "make-it or break-it" deal for DC. After years of controversial and un-even big events (starting with Identity Crisis culminating with Blackest Night), they need a big win here, a universe defining win, a fan-pleasing win... And so far so good. The first issue was fantastic--- with the exception of the "big deaths" at the end. Not a real surprise, as it's been telegraphed since before the end of Final Crisis. I guess we can view this as the (bloody, violent and wasteful) end of Johns' incarnation of these characters, as I'm fairly certain the new (inevitable) iteration will be more Silver Age (and there's nothing wrong with that, I guess, as I'm a fan of that version as well, but what a pity when we could have it both ways, as we do here on the DC2 ). But if that sort of thing keeps up, I'm gonna go all Jay McIntyre on their @$$es! For the record, my opnions are as follows: Crisis on Infinite Earths: Still the best. Nothing so far compares. Identity Crisis: Win Infinite Crisis: Ball dropped at the end. Fail. 52: Epic win. Countdown: Epic fail Final Crisis: Disappointing and riviting at the same time. Ultimately, a fail, I think--- but a glorious one. Of course, I guess all of them accomplished what they set out to do, as I bought and read them all, along with hundreds of tie-in issues (with the exception of Countdown: I dropped that pretty early on as unreadable). What does everyone else think?

I really liked this first issue and the deaths actually surprised me. I must have missed all the signs. And I have to agree with everything you said about the other events as well. Though the second crisis I enjoyed probably a bit more and the final crisis was not riveting to me at all. lol I do think that the big wigs at DC need to watch this one carefully, though. If this doesn't hit it out of the park, they need to take a good look at what is going on around them.

They'll be back though. Those victims were 100% definitely selected so that they can bring them back...

They'll be back though. Those victims were 100% definitely selected so that they can bring them back... Yes, but I get the feeling they'll be back in their Silver Age incarnations, which means this is a farewell to the version I've loved for the last ten years...

What, Geoff Johns make something into the way it was in the Silver Age? SURELY NOT!

i read the BN... gotta say it's off to good start :-D Anyway, I think the Blackest Night is a good start from the fact that going back to the beginning and telling stories that are new and interesting with characters that are beloved will reinvigorate DC. I hope this is true. It's a similar formula that J.J. Abrams used to relaunch Star Trek to a whole new generation of fans. If Blackest Night can do the same thing then I am all for it... The deaths of ***CENSORED FOR JAY'S BP**** is formulaic of the idea that you have to sacrifice the lamb for the story to have any substance. So by that, I mean introducing new ideas may cause some people to pause, but this is issue one of eight... so I am willing to give this a ride for awhile to see how it goes. My view isn't without bias though... I am a huge Geoff Johns fan. Peace.

I liked it. Thought it worked, for what it was, and I'm excited for future issues. I'm not... jumping up and down, you know? I read it, I enjoyed it. Thought it was utterly violent, a bloody bloodfest of bloodsome blood, but there was more to that. I think that people who focus on just that miss out on a sad epitaph to the last few years of the DCU. Yes, it's about the dead coming to life (somewhat), but I'm hopeful that by the end... the dead will rise and stay risen, and that Aquaman will return, and as will every other hero and villain will too.
Because that... would be amazing.
Well, that was bit of a ramble.

*SPOILER WARNING!!!!*
Just got issue #2 and oh my god one of my all time favorite characters and a character I love writing every month kicked the bucket...Garth/Tempest formerly known as Aqualad. That was absolutely shocking but Black Lantern Aquaman kicked ass! And yes I am completely bias!

Ah, funds, how you elude me--! I should pick this up soon, but between living for the week and saving for going to Venice, comics seems to take a secondary position to surviving, heh. Looking forward to it, though. Seen some bits, and... well, wow.

Every time I hear about the latest news in official DC, I am reminded of why I left. Time was, until very recently, I heard about what they were doing, and I hated it, but I also understood it. Now...now I don't even get it any more, They say the past is a foreign country; well now DC is to me a foreign country. It's like the language got changed from English to....I dunno, Sanskrit, only written upside down and backwards.

Jay, I might be eating my words at the end of this event, but I think things are going to work out better than they are now. I really think this series will be hitting a big re-set button and giving us back some old favorites. I refuse to believe that TPTB--- not to mention Geoff Johns!--- are going to write off Aquaman, the Hawks, Martian Manhunter, Ronnie Raymond or the Dibneys. Who knows: you may even get Terra back! Not to sound cheesy, but after the Blackest Night comes what...? (say it with me folks)... a Brightest Day? I doubt they'll miss an opportunity to capitalize on that. Think of it, a new Silver Age! Anyway, loved issue #2. Only sorry I didn't get to see that little bastard Palmer go to it! BN: Batman was pretty good, too. That last panel with the zombies crawling over the Bat-signal was classic.

With my luck it would be psycho-evil wanna kill the Titans Terra I, who is if I understand right the incarnation of her appering in Blackest Night.
And anyhow, the whole reason Atlee (the Brunette 'Terra') happened is because Didio told Palmiotti and Gray he wanted a new Terra (they said so in an interview). I've been burned too many times to hope.
And Didio seems to want the Silver Age characters, but in a grim, gritty, modern NC-17 world. And we know how much he loves bumping characters off.
I would love to eat my words on this. I really would. But I ain't holding my breath.

I think there's a 95% chance everyone who dies in this event will be back at the end- as well as a LOT (If not all) of those who died before it. I've enjoyed it- it hasn't had very many "OMG" moments so far, but it's been very tight writing, VERY good, best thing Johns has done in a while.

And we know how much he loves bumping characters off. Argh, Jay... I don't think that's true, I think that's what you believe. I don't agree with that comment. If the death serves the story-- and I'm not saying death serves a story well, I'm just saying this is what I think their approach is-- then it's acceptable, but it's not death for death's sake. The past five-ish years has been a calculated build toward Blackest Night. There might have been some blips (for instance the discrepancies between Black Masks' motivations in Rebirth #1 and GL#43, and changing the story from Green Lantern: Blackest Night to DCU: Blackest Night) but I think this is shaping up to be a brilliant story, and yes, I agree with Kevin, though I would say... 70%?

well...ive been enjoying this after the suckage that was final crisis, which was about as epic as a paper bag rolling down the street-recycleable and dull...but this is my opinion, some people loved it, not enough happenned for me
but this, i am really enjoying, cant wait to see where it goes, i do have some kinda hope/inkling that they are bringing people back in this title, there is no way they would go about what they are doing without bringing back others
i can see a return of a lot of characters i hold dear, and i also think there is something odd going on with the specific characters dc has focused on who have come back from the dead(wonder woman, hal, ollie etc). there is something in that-these are not the only characters who have died and been brought back so i think something specific is going on, we will see
i have a lot more buzz around this title, and can only hope johns will deliver as i often think he can.
re didio caring or having a clue, i dunno, i think he cares about money, and, bringing back silver age characters is a big thing for dc at the moment, so, we will see!

It was this series that pretty much made me cut down on buying comics. I've not bought anything new for... two weeks now... and I'm trying really hard not to buy anything else for the foreseeable (I'm becoming one of the dreaded... TRADE WAITERS! I love the story so much, but I can't afford to keep buying all the tie-ins like I did Infinite Crisis (when my comic spending was determined by my dad's generosity, and not my own wage, eh), even though I really want to. Haven't bought a new TPB for a long time, so this could be the start of something. But God, do I really like this series.

Issue Six rocked. Ivan Reis' artwork is awesome. Good thing is was voted number one on www.newsarama.com as an event. Green Lantern was voted number one for ongoing series and Geoff Johns voted number one for writer. Finally something to shut up my brother's pro-marvel mouth. And I hope the Baltimore beats New England this weekend. Mischief:D

I've really been enjoying Blackest Night so far(my only complaint being Black Hand's seemingly minimal involvement after that whole GL issue devoted to him. But that could change in the last part of the series.) I don't think I've ever liked a DC event as much as I am Blackest Night. It kicks the crap out of the last two Crises in my opinion.

I've been loving this event. The tie-ins have been brilliant and actually adding to the stories and character development in the ongoing titles. The main series is making statements about the characters and their place in the universe. It's what crossovers should be in my opinion. The emotional reactions they have toward the Black Lanterns and everything that has gone into the overall story going all the way back to GL Rebirth. I tihnk Geoff Johns has been on his game with this one and it's easily the best event since the original crisis.

Was at a gig just now, just got back in (and yes, it was brilliant), and I had to share this with you-- the sound board operator was wearing a Red Lantern t-shirt. Wonderful

Blackest Night is all wrapped up and many of the predictions came true. We got back some dead characters but it appears we have lost some others. I have been seeing that many people are expecting more resurrections in Brightest Day.
Spoiler
So far the resurrected characters are...
Martian Manhunter Aquaman Hawk I The Antimonitor Hawkman Hawkgirl(as Shayera) Max Lord Digger Harkness Eobard Thawne Ronnie Raymond
I'm holding out hope that Brightest Day gives us more.

AQUAMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Loved him and Mera's reunion! agreed. It's great to have the one true king back and back with his queen. Personally I really enjoyed this "event". It was fun, and that's something that I've been missing in comics lately. And I'm one of the few that was really happy with the Hawkgirl twist as well, probably.
