Right, so I don't get this series at all.
I mean, I love Giffen, and I love him mining concepts and finding gold, and he's kind of doing this with Magog, but really... who asked for this series? And why don't we get to see more Manhunter? Is Magog selling more than Manhunter did?
And what's with Tom Derenick being the go-to artist when it comes to Giffen's "outsider" projects? Reign in Hell (what were the repercussions there? Really? and who but Giffen will play with those characters now?) had him there, and he always pops up at weird moments. He did on Shadowpact too, right?
Why isn't he on a big book? He's tight enough, especially when he's elevated by Bill Sienkiewicz... just a thought.
Who knows what the numbers are on later days Manhunter and current Magog?

I don't know anything about sales figures but I can certainly tell you that Manhunter was a more beloved character than Magog. I've read through the first five issues and just gave up. Not compelling. Not heroic and not worth the cover price. Worse, they're foisting him onto us JSA readers. Can we just get Power Girl to uppercut him out into space with an escape velocity?

Not compelling. Not heroic and not worth the cover price. Manhunter evolved into a real character, and Magog has been forced on us. It's very strange. I mean, I try and trust Giffen for the most part, but he's always given these ancillary titles, ever since 52, that are steadily ignored by other writers (Four Horsemen, Reign In Hell). I'm thinking that when it comes down to it, when Generation Lost picks up something's gonna give, and it's gonna be Magog. Doom Patrol seems to be filling a niche in the DCU, and I kind of want to get into it, but I've missed the opening issues so I'm apprehensive about it. Hmm. Worse, they're foisting him onto us JSA readers. Can we just get Power Girl to uppercut him out into space with an escape velocity? True. I want to see him do something, but I think the point is that he's an unlikeable anti-hero that follows his morals down the line-- but we're supposed to like him, aren't we? It's a shame he's just full of fail and a damn Kingdom Come reject. Poor show.

I don't mind anti-heroes but when you're not likable or even have a really good reason for being the way you are, nobody is going to care. When your first act in your title is to brutally slaughter your enemies, it sets the tone right off. The snotty and arrogant attitude didn't help either. Kingdom Come was a great story but really should have been kept as an Elseworlds thing. I can draw a parallel here but I'm not going to open that can.

Like I've said, I want to love the concept and the character, but when they make him a complete and utter arsehole then how am I supposed to? I picked up the first three issues (all in the 50p bin, take from that what you will) and it's just... crap. Damn. Kingdom Come was a great story but really should have been kept as an Elseworlds thing. I can draw a parallel here but I'm not going to open that can. Yeah, I know what you mean. It was pretty much one of the best self contained stories I'd read, and then... they kept expanding it. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed parts of The Kingdom (Ibn! Nightfire! Offspring's relationship with his father ) but then they kept rolling it out again and again, with Gog during Austen's tenure, and then JSA, and now this ongoing... how many issues do you think it'll last?

I haven't read any of it because it does not look interesting in the slightest. With the way he was portrayed in KC I don't see how they can have him around and Superman not come whooping his ass right away. I did like the JSA arc with KC Superman on New Earth. I'm a sucker for Superman flying around with another Superman though. I wish E-2 Supes would have stuck longer after IC.

Yeah, the series is concluding with #12 (was there any doubt?) and apparently it's tying in some what with Kingdom Come-- or characters seeking to make sure Kingdom Come never comes to pass. Eh. I dunno what I make of that, but it was a waste of resources, though I do love the contextualisation that Giffen brings to his books. The mythology here along with the concept of a black market supervillain set up, and the information scrawl in Doom Patrol. Nice, interesting, wasted stuff.
Charlie.
