Groan... S P O I L E R S B E L O W ! ! ! What the Hell??? It's bad enough that Alan Scott's eye has mysteriously vanished, but now he's DC's answer to Nick Fury too? Problems: - Alan works for an agency that kills. Just because he asks them to keep the 'casualties to a minimum' does not make up for this!
- Fire is now a killer??? I know they attempted to establish that she was some Brazillian bad-ass in the OMAC project special, but does this seem a little odd & off to anyone else? She was a freakin' model for God's sake!
- Mr. Teriffic works for a team that kills now too? Fair Play? I think not!
- King Faraday a member of Checkmate? #$%&@^%!&^&&%^%#$!!!! AAARRRGGGHHH!!!
Otherwise, I liked it.

I don't think it's the same Ice. They replaced the dead one in the 90's.
"I Can't Believe it's not the Justice League" featured her return briefly, but Fire had to look!

You know, I agree with you 100% Scott, on all of the above--- there are so many things wrong with this title! Alan Scott and Mr. Terrific are totally out of place (not to mention out of character)--- but despite it all, I kinda enjoyed this story (other than Alan Scott and Mr. Terrific). It was a neat set-up, a gripping, well-told narrative with decent art. I can even see Bea DiCosta as the Sydney Bristow type, pulled back into the life! DC can make this work--- but not with Alan Scott and Mr. Terrific. No way would they be party to the shenanigans that went down in this issue. Surely, the DCU is rich enough in character history to find others more suited to those roles!

There was a lot to this that I actually liked. I agree one hundred percent with both of you about Scott and Terrific. I'm assuming we will eventually find out what happened to Alan's eye.
I don't know why, but Fire being there didn't bother me that much. Maybe I'm just not as familiar with the character. I only read her during the JLI years. All in all, I liked it. Enjoyed the art as well.

I'd have to agree with you guys and say that I thought the killing seemed out of place for the characters involved, but beside that, the story was certainly good for a first issue, and I like it overall. I hope we find out what happened to Alan's eye in the near future. It seemed kind of strange to have that there with no explanation, but that is bound to happen in a OYL book.

I agree with Brian; there were some things wrong with it (Alan and Terrific working for a 'shoot first, ask questions later' organisation, Fire killing, etc), but on the whole, I actually rather enjoyed it.

Pretty cool that the Squad is back in the DCU! Here I thought I was the only one here who was a fan....Oh wait I guess I still am! I know I am in a small group of Squad fans out there but it does bring a smile to my face when writers like Greg Rucka takes the time to bring out some old friends for at least one evening on the town. Who knows maybe he checked out some of the cool stuff on the Squad here and decided to give it a shot himself. Maybe thats why if you read the DC2 Suicide Squad book you too can stay ahead of what the next big at DC will be. Unless your Charlie and your looking for Richard Dragon... check out page 4 of the preview www.popcultureshock.com/checkmate-6/40258/

It was interesting to see Alan Scott, who is a pillar of goodness, who had lost his daughter in space, being apart of Checkmate. Alan Scott maybe was naive to think that he could do good with a spy agency. Alan Scott was the one person that attempted to keep Checkmate honest and uncorrupted. But he failed in that aspect. Remember that all the other members of the United Nation with the exception of the U.S. wanted Alan Scott to stay.
After the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Fire's her history was altered so that she had followed an unusual career path, starting as an amateur model on the beaches of Rio, then becoming a showgirl and stage performer before finding herself serving as an undercover secret agent for the Brazilian government.
Later on, she character was used in light hearted times of the Justice League. I didn't mind that Grege Rucka returned her to her spy days. And in the world of Espionage, killing is sometimes necessary. Alan Scott has to face the fact just like Mr. Terrific, that killing is apart of the job. If not, go back to the JSA, and battle the Injustice Society, while Kobra runs amuck.
Just because Fire killed some one, doesn't mean that she doesn't mean that she likes doing it. She is doing a job, that Amanda Waller, the White Queen, maybe blackmailing her to do.
I love this series.
