I bloody well loved this issue. A great jumping on point, but stuffed to the brim with so much content that it was just... amazing. The writing was sharp as ever, the dialogue crisp, and the direction we're going in now... I'm loving it. I keep thinking that Birds of Prey on the DC2 is the equivalent of X-Factor over on Marvel right now, the private investigators of the DC2niverse, and I like that, I can use that in my head down the line for something, and Don has hinted and teased at storylines that follow up on that promise, so I'm psyched.
Amethyst plays on a few fears of mine (not critical fears, literary), in that the kind of... displacement from ones own identity, being separate from the world you're supposed to be part of, or in some other identity... that scares me. That kind of story telling scares me, and I know that you're not going as far with it in the way that would make me uncomfortable (stories such as Face/Off freak the unholy shit out of me, to be honest), it still feels horrible for this girl to believe so truly in something-- and we don't even know yet if it's real or if she's mad! This is the DC2, we haven't seen Gemworld before, have we?!-- and for no one else to believe her. That's horrible. So we've got the Narnia references, and I've got a distinct Wizard of Oz feeling going on (the terrifying sequel*, with the electric shock therapy? Yikes), what with the psychiatrist and the disbelief... okay, I'm rambling, but I like this, very much like Ultimate Thor, and I'm going to follow this thread eagerly.
The camaraderie between the Birds themselves is wonderful. Fully delivering on the promise of friendship and fun that you started in Justice League, these characters fit together nicely, and I can't wait to see what comes from it. This day off of theirs was lovely, and it still found time to be bouncy and flow like a river, never boring me as a reader.
The Moondancers are a fascinating group-- domestic terrorists?-- with an interesting agenda, a relatable approach to their goings on, and if they're on campus', if they're working like that... does this mean there could be more of them? Across the country? Small cells of Moondancers, convincing impressionable minds of the "right way to think"? And these three are just the start? Another thread I'm going to follow with interest. But I want to see Zenobia go up against them, so they can exchange "philosophies". That would be a blast!
With Jonni and Nemesis... are their hints there of a developing relationship? Or are the Birds going to be co-opted by the government due to their connection with him? Ugh, can we expect an appearance by The Wall in the future?
I love this title. So much potential for awesome, often realised (if not always), but also leaving the reader guessing as to what can happen next. With characters and concepts so thoroughly connected to the DC2 continuity, we get to see stories play with groundwork established years ago. That's why I'm here, on the DC2, to read stories like this.
And that cover! That cover was freaking amazing! Steve, you're an artistic tour de force, and I'm glad to see you back on this title. Blueserjo's cover last issue was brilliant, but you bring something different, a different aesthetic that just works here. Great work. Thanks for taking the time!
Five stars! Everyone should read this title if they aren't already!
* I never read the books, so my knowledge of Oz is strictly from the films, which isn't terribly bad, but it's not terribly good either. The sequel scared me when I was a wee lad, and I don't dare watch it again...

I had a lot of fun reading this issue. I gotta admit, the Steven Howard cover drew me in, but the engrossing character work kept me glued to the screen. The scenes with Amy Winstom were the standout (especially the cliffhanger), but Jonni and Tom's relationship is intriguing...!
And I'm with Charlie--- I want to see Zenobia exchange "philosophies" with the Moondancers!
Thanks for a great time, Sam, Don and Steve! Be back next issue!

Thanks for the comments. Some interesting thoughts from Charlie, that are fascinating to read. Definitely the literary sources I'm working with for Amy, having been a big fan of Wizard of Oz in all its incarnations, and I loved the way they handled Ultimate Thor at Marvel. It's so much fun writing this team in general, they're all rather optimistic and strong personalities: not much moping here, not even with those who might have a reason to be a little mopey. Glad you liked the Moondancers. They are just the tip of the iceberg, that's for sure. And two requests for Zenobia to 'chat' with them? Well, not this time around, but don't worry, I'm sure they're tea time is coming. And thanks to Dave for pointing out just how important the artists are for this site. Brought in by the beautiful Steve Howard cover, that's a great way for it to work. Glad you checked it out, and glad you enjoyed. Nemesis will be hanging around, and it seems like Jonni's at the center of several attentions: Tom, Frankie and Mockingbird. But then, not surprising, she's that sort of lady. We'll keep making these as good as we can, and hopefully, you all keep enjoying. Take care Don

Boy, just when I thought this issue was all set-up, you go and start thrashing a bunch of ROTC guys! And lil' Amy Winston, so earnest in her beliefs that she'll run into the middle of the fight...and THEN she gts powers! I imagine her standing there with her grown-up Amethyst outfit draped over her 14-year-old body, like a girl wearing Mommy's dresses. This is not what I expected, but I likes it!

Thanks Susan - that was the idea. It's going to be fun (for me, anyway) to watch Amy trying to deal with the idea that she has her grown-up powers in her teenage body. Going to be quite the learning curve.
Really glad to hear this being so well-received. Makes us work harder to remember to get the next ones out XD

Hey, I guess I'll be the late one this time around but there is a metric butt-ton load of stuff to love with this issue. The biggest being the introduction of Amethyst and there is a great play of reality and non-reality. And by that I mean if Amy is really a sorceress herself or if her otherworld persona is channeling power into our world. Even if the latter is true, it very well could be against her will given the nature of her condition in Gemworld. Also intriguing is the continuing exploration of the "link" between Dawn and Kendra. I think both of them are kind of freaked out by the whole thing and finding a answer or at least a reason would make them feel better. And, since we're on the topic of links, I too like seeing the possible development a friendship between Tom and Jonni. At least they can talk shop if nothing else. I was kind of bummed to see Zenobia go but I expect that we haven't seen the last of her by a long shot. It'll be interesting to see how Onyx takes her first steps to becoming her own woman without Zenobia's influence. And, while the Moondancers were a interesting contradiction, I have to admit that I'm chomping at the bit more to the arrival of the Nations group and to see how that comes at the worst possible moment (as things invariably do). Still, a knock-down-drag-out fight next issue sounds really good too
