One of the things I've been doing behind the scenes is making sure there's a solid artistic foundation for the future. That means scouring DeviantArt for stellar pieces of work that'd fit our stories, but also trying to make sure every book has a cool logo made from the best of my somewhat limited ability, or at least reconstitute old logos that are spread across various websites and Google Drives. One of my favourite DC2 logos of all time is the one for The New Outsiders: I believe it was a Brandon Herren-- our original Art Director and dearly departed friend-- designs, and it's brilliant. There's so much going on and it was always one of the most iconic and punchiest piece of design work we had to grace our covers. That said, unfortunately that's the highest quality version of the logo we have. Every other version has been scaled up from that original, so it gets blurry, and I don't see how anyone can properly reconstitute a large version from that smaller file. So, when I'm struggling to get a sentence down in any of my myriad writerly commitments, I fiddle about and make logos. Here's one I made for The New Outsiders: I spent a silly amount of time on this, but I tried to honour the past and duplicate what came before as closely as possible. As you can see, that wasn't really an option due to it being nearly fifteen years since the original file was put together, but I'm really pleased with the end result.
"But Charlie, why are you redesigning a logo for a title that hasn't had a new issue out in nearly eight years?" I hear you ask!
Because The New Outsiders were always the DC2's premier team, it was a book started in our first month, and it should have been running to this day, easily surpassing Justice League's issue count, easily showing it's longevity. But for a number of reasons, the book ended, the team took a one year time jump, and then Batwoman and the Outsiders launched and lasted one issue. There was a New Outsider Special that teased the launch of a Justice League of America book, but that didn't pan out for even more reasons.
A one year time jump. A city in ruins. A team torn asunder.
There were hints and teases a few years ago in Justice League as to what happened-- because of course, I know what happened-- but apart from that, nothing.
I know what happened though.
And I think...
Very soon...
You all will too.
