Adam Strange rocketed towards his home, after so many years.
He hadn't been on Rann when the Rann-Thanagar conflict erupted. But he knew it was due to folks back here on Earth that it had ended as quickly as it had. He was grateful for that.
So much he had left behind all those years ago when he was zapped by that Zeta Beam.....but now he was almost home.
Then he frowned. His instruments were not the best, but they were telling him that there was some sort of conflagration going on in the rings of Saturn. What was that about? He was eager to return to Earth, but if something there was a threat, and he did nothing? Then Earth might suffer. He couldn't let that happen.
He closed in, having to slow down a bit now that he was back in the Solar System. It wasn't like riding the Zeta beam through the dark matter and empty void of interstellar space. He could still move quick, but there were limits. Especially when the gravitational pull of the planets came into play.
Saturn was not the biggest planet, of course, but it was significant enough. Fighting the pull of the Sun and Jupiter, he focused in on Saturn and it's glittering rings. Even at this distance from the Sun of his youth, they glittered like gems against the backdrop of their gas giant world and the deeper, darker jewelry set of space itself.
As he closed in, he recognized soon enough that it was a Citadel fleet. He frowned; Rann had twice repulsed attacks by the Citadel, one a casual raiding flotilla and one more serious invasion attempt. Since then, they had been more busy with Thanagar, but they were still aware of the Citadel threat. His chest tightened. If they had chosen to target Earth....!
Then as he got closer he saw that at least two ships were damaged, but there was no sign of enemy ships, not even of debris. He frowned in puzzlement, until he saw colorful flashes inside one of the ships. He laughed in the realization; Earth's heroes had already risen to the occasion.
Which didn't mean he couldn't lend a helping hand.....
He swooped in.

Starfire and Blackfire exchanged starbolts, and both yelped and fell. Nightwing saw, and shouted for his love, but got a Gordanian fist to the jaw for his trouble. Gardner saw, but could not spare time to help.
The Gordanian picked Nightwing up by the throat and grinned with too many pointed teeth, readying his weapon for the kill. Nightwing's right hand stabbed down with a two finger strike to it's wrist, and he kicked against it's armored waist with both legs. It was made of stern stuff; his attack, which would have left most humans on the floor was not nearly so effective. But it grunted and let him go.
He tumbled over to where Starfire was getting up. He checked on her; she nodded blearily. Across from her, Blackfire was also struggling to regain consciousness.
Nightwing lashed out with a kick, connecting with the renegade Tamaranean's jaw. He knew how tough Blackfire had to be, having trained with Starfire all this time. It wouldn't be enough to take her out, but if he could give Starfire the advantage, buy her time....
Blackfire's head rocked back, but then she glared at him and grabbed his leg, just above the ankle. He felt the burn in her grip as she powered up a starbolt. Starfire never used her powers in that way...she probably meant to fry his leg bone. He responded by dropping a flashbang pellet right in her face
She cried out and let go, but his leg burned from the heat of it. Rolling away, he wasn't sure their situation had improved any. Gardner was still busy with half a dozen Gordanians in the corner and couldn't reach them....
The ship rocked, and suddenly a door blast open. Nightwing almost had to laugh at the apparition thus presented; a man in what appeared to be a 1950s era science fiction costume, complete with helmet, jetpack, and ray gun.
Several of the Gordanians made grunting noises that were probably their equivalent of a laugh. The stranger smiled a thin, hard smile, and fired his weapon. A thin beam of brilliant white light reached out and connected, and the Gordanian went down.
Nightwing had no idea who he was, but at this point he wasn't going to cast aside any allies. The man focused on him and nodded, then started shooting Gordanians.
Gardner seemed surprised too, then grinned and resumed his own emerald attack on the enemy.
Nightwing had indeed bought Starfire time; she was up on her knees, and let her hated sister have it with starbolts from both fists. Blackfire screamed, then kicked her away.
Leaving Gardner and the mystery man to handle the rest of the room, Nightwing returned to Starfire and Blackfire.
Blackfire had her eyes shut from the starbolts to the face, but didn't seem to be mottling up or bruising any, at least not yet. It would figure that the sisters were resistant to their own powers. She was keeping her eyes shut, though, blindly lashing out for her sister.
Starfire was keeping back, but there was no smile on her face. She was throwing the occasional starbolt, and when it impacted, Blackfire blindly fired back in the same direction, sometimes hitting, sometimes not.
Nightwing watched and waited for just the right moment. He and Starfire had gone over this thousands of times in training simulations, and applied it on the field of battle before. The thought fleetingly occurred to him that Starfire might want this battle to be an honorable one alone; then dismissed it. Blackfire would not hold to such honor, he knew; and Starfire was too smart to trust to that. Never mind the fact that they were on a ship crawling with Gordanians, surrounded by a fleet likewise populated.
So he waited for the right moment, then leapt, planting his feet in Blackfire's back. Blackfire stumbled forward, into two more starbolts from Starfire. Instead of reaching back for Nightwing, Blackfire screamed and blindly threw herself into her sister. The two Tamaraneans went down in a tumble of arms and legs. Blackfire desperately trying to find her sister's face, and more importantly, her eyes.
Nightwing tried to get her in a full nelson and she kicked him off like an offending dog. Starfire took advantage of the moment to headbutt Blackfire.

On the dreadnaught, Dagon was ripping and tearing away at his foes.
Aliens were something of a moral gray area. Killing them was still inadvisable, if it could be avoided. It wasn't like risking the life of a human being, especially since the aliens were bent on invading Earth. Besides, Starfire was an alien and Dagon certainly valued her life. And one could make the case that, no longer being human himself, and technically no longer alive in the traditional sense, he too was expendable. But the Titans didn't look at him that way, something for which he was very grateful
So the question remained; kill the Gordanians?
Not unless it couldn't be avoided, he decided reluctantly. He slashed at two Gordanians, and slammed a third into a bulkhead. Unlike Cyborg, his undead state gave him both strength and speed. But he wasted no time gloating over it, or even thinking about it; he simply fought.
Scarlet Wing soared overhead. So far, she hadn't had Dagon's problem; her eggsplosives weakened and stunned Gordanians but didn't even properly knock them out. She was faster and more agile than an ordinary person, but her strength wasn't much more, and it wouldn't do for a Gordanian to get a hold on her. Fortunately in these confined quarters the weren't trying to use their energy weapons. Much.
Cyborg was actually somewhat happy. Once he realized how much punishment they could take, he was able to cut loose, and not hold back. He recalled hearing that Superman had said something similar once.. Now he knew what the Man of Steel had meant.
He struck a full strength blow to a Gordanian. It grunted and went down, but started to get up again. He kicked it in the head, hard, three times. This time it stayed down.
Two more pounced on him, but he knocked them away with a convulsive push. Reconstructing his mechanical hand to it's white noise cannon configuration, he fine tuned it's frequency to only hurt organic beings that weren't human. That technically could risk Dagon, but his tactical computer implants didn't calculate it as being likely. So he opened fire, attacking the Gordanians' nerve systems.
Beast Boy had no problem, taking the form of a bull and literally charging into the enemy. Like the others, he was experiencing how much more physically resilient Gordanians were. “Guess you idiots trade brain for muscle mass, huh? You'd fit right in on muscle beach, then.”
“Not now,” Cyborg sighed, then blinked his human eye, as a thought came to him. “Anyway, keep em busy.” He unleashed a sonic shockwave, knocking four Gordanians back, and sprinted through the gap.
Beast Boy's bull face frowned in punishment, then figured his buddy must have a plan. He absorbed several blows from the Gordanians, then noticed one was actually readying his plasma weapon. He shifted to scaled down Tyrannosaurus Rex and lashed out with a tail, knocking the weapon away.
Raven opened her cloak and allowed her soul self to stretch out. Three Gordanians stumbled in, they came back out, screaming. One collapsed, the other two ran willy nilly. She teleported behind a Gordanian and touched the back of it's head, and sent it to the floor, writhing in pain.
For Troia, there wasn't much difference; she simply pounded her way through the opposition, clearing a path for the others. One Gordanian got hold of her wrist and grinned with cruel pointy teeth; she grinned back and threw him into his fellows. Were there any female Gordanians, she wondered fleetingly, or were they simply not in the military? Starfire had only spoken in passing about the Citadel military.

Kid Flash was in his element, zipping through the corridors. The greater resiliency of the enemy was nothing to him; when he connected with someone at super speed, they went down. His injuries were a thing of the past, now back up to full speed, he was once again of the Titans' most powerful members. He joyed being in the thick of it again. There had been a time when the shift in membership had saddened and discouraged him. But no more; between his restoration to health and his relationship with Raven had restored him to the core of the Titans team once more.
As he raced along the pathways, he came upon Cyborg, moving with purpose. “Where you going, man?”
“I was trying to find the flight deck,” Cyborg said, “But if there's a computer control room, that will do nicely. I presume you've found both.”
“Flight deck, coming up!” Kid Flash grabbed hold of Cyborg, and rushed him to the flight deck. He had taken out all but three of the Gordanians here already; three others and one strange alien with gray skin and weblike ears remained. These went down easily enough.
Neither of them had any idea what the other alien was, but it was no secret that Gordanians weren't the only race in the Citadel. Blackfire might be the only traitorous Tamaranean amongst their ranks, they believed. But other races were involved too. Gordanians were just the muscle.
“So, what's the plan?” Kid Flash asked.
“Right now, the other ships aren't attacking because we're on board. But eventually, they'll figure out that these ships need aid, and send reinforcements. So we have to take those ships out first.”
“By hacking this one?”
“By hacking this one,” Cyborg agreed. “We'll target everyone except the flagship, where of course the others are fighting.”
“You need my help?”
“You already did. Go help the others. If we clear the ship, the come back to me.”
“You got it.” Kid Flash vanished in a blur of gold and scarlet.
“Now then,” Cyborg mused, datajacks extending from his wrist on cables, “Let's see....”

A Gordanian grabbed the still-recovering Blackfire and pulled her away from Nightwing and Starfire.
“No!” Starfire shouted. She and Nightwing rushed forward, but by the time Lantern and Adam Strange noticed what was happening, the bulkhead door slid shut sideways with a deep metallic clank.
Lantern and Strange finished mopping up the remaining Gordanians in the chamber, and came over to them.
Starfire blasted the door three times without effect, then pounded angrily against it.
“I can rig a charge,” Nightwing said.
“Leave it to me kid,” Gardner said. Nightwing and Starfire stepped away, and one pulse of green ring power later, the door was blasted open. Not surprisingly, Blackfire was gone.
“She can't get far,” Starfire said.
“I'm interested in our new friend, here.” Lantern said. “That technology isn't human....can't quite place it.”
“I was transported to Rann by accident many years ago,” Adam Strange sighed.
“Wait...a human amongst the Rannians....yeah, the Corps heard somethin' about that,” Guy said thoughtfully.
“I'm glad he's helping us,” Nightwing said, “But now is not the time.”
“We need to get to the flight deck before Blackfire does,” Adam Strange agreed.

Blackfire roused herself and angrily shoved the Gordanian away. “Where are we?”
“In the barracks, mistress,” the Gordanian grunted. “We have gathered our remaining numbers to assault the foe.”
Blackfire scowled, and refrained from blasting him down where he stood; he had saved her from her sister, after all. Defeated again; how was it even possible, given her overwhelming numerical superiority? It went against every tactical scenario and simulation; against every warrior's tale from history, whether their own people's or that of the Citadel. She shook her head.
“We have to find them, now!”
They raced out, but then the ship began to lurch to one side. “What?” the Gordanian officer grunted.
Blackfire seethed with fury. “They've commandeered the ship!” Now, she did turn and blast him to ash.

Cyborg had taken control of the vessel, and was directing it to attack all the other ships except the command vessel, where he knew Nightwing, Starfire and the Lantern were. He faced the same moral dilemma that Dagon had earlier about killing the enemy; so he did his best to just disable the other craft, rather than destroy them. They would not be so kind in return, of course.
He was startled to notice that the command ship lurched and then began firing on the others too; then reflected that he shouldn't have been surprised. Of course, he thought it was Nightwing's idea, not knowing that Adam Strange was present.
His mood improved, but they were still terribly outgunned. The other Citadel ships might hesitate to fire on them, but he wondered how long that would last.

They had forced their way to the bridge and cleared it. Adam Strange had a little bit more trouble taking over the command ship than Cyborg had the other, but the end result was the same. Gardner had offered to help with his ring, but Strange had waved him off. “Perhaps later. I see though, one of the other ships is helping us?”
Nightwing grinned. “Must be Cyborg's doing. He's our resident tech.”
“A cyborg you say? Interesting,” Adam Strange mused.
“For some reason my ring isn't blocking the yellow energy blasts,” Gardner said, “And it should be able to do that now. But I can still supercharge both this ship and that one, and ensure safe communications.”
Before he could do anything of the sort, however, the doors blew in and Blackfire was there, glaring murder at Starfire, backed by a serious number of Gordanians. “Now it ends, sister!” she shrieked.
Starfire, Lantern, and Adam Strange all fired at once. Orange starbolt, Green Lantern ring energy, and white laser beam all intersected with Blackfire and knocked her back through her men like a bowling ball through pins.
The remaining Gordanians advanced.

As she tumbled through her forces, Blackfire was more than stunned, she was properly knocked out, her chest armor smoldering from the triple impact.
She was not unconscious for long, however. Slowly and painfully she awoke. Her vision was blurry, and refused to focus at first. Gritting her teeth, she spat, whether it was just spittle or actual blood she was not immediately sure.
But while her chest burned and at least one rib was broken, the greatest wound was to her pride.
The Titans' mysterious new ally....or was it member? Had tipped the scales, so much was clear. But even his involvement did not explain how things had gone so disastrously wrong. Rage and pride warred with tactical caution in her soul; now would be a good time to retreat, as she knew that the Titans would simply overwhelm these troopers. It shouldn't be, but there it was. She could not win against them from here. But she refused to simply give up.
Painfully, she limped down the corridor towards the escape pods. Not to run, but to go to one of the other ships, to take command from there and kill her sister once and for all.
She didn't yet realize that another ship had already been suborned, of course.

As the Adam Strange gunned down the last Gordanian, they all felt the ship lurch a little.
“Escape pod,” said Strange.
“Blackfire,” Starfire hissed.
“You want to chase her down?” Lantern asked, ring gleaming bright.
Starfire thought about it. “She's probably trying to get to another ship.”
“The other Titans already have their dreadnaught under control,” Nightwing said. “Let's help them!”
“Target whatever ship is closest to Blackfire's escape pod,” Starfire said.
Adam Strange nodded and got to work.

Blackfire watched, honestly stunned, as the plasma bolts flashed past her tiny escape pod, and slammed into the Attack Cruiser she had been planning to board.
It's engines crippled, it spun away from her, and she knew that boarding it would be futile.
“So, sister. Somehow I underestimated you and your human lackeys, again.” Blackfire shook her head in a mixture of amazement, hatred, and grudging respect.
She would actually have to let her sister live, again. Admit defeat, again.
But however much her pride and hate might have blinded her, Blackfire was still cunning, and still able to learn from her mistakes.
For the moment, she did not adjust her course. She killed the engines, but allowed the escape pod to continue to drift towards the now crippled attack cruiser.
Her former command ship turned and fired on the other vessels in the fleet, as did one of the dreadnaughts. Presumably some of her human allies had taken control of it, as well.
Humans clearly were a vital resource to be utilized. The Citadel had already decided this, and desired to conquer the planet for that very reason. What was more, her hated sister had not only lived amongst them for some time, but decided to make one her consort. Whatever else Blackfire might think of her sister, she knew that Starfire was no fool. If she found a human worthy to lay with, then surely there were others that would be useful. Not that Blackfire had any intention of taking any human to bed, of course; but if they could be manipulated into serving her own quest, that was acceptable.
And besides, she dared not return to the Citadel and report failure a second time. The punishments she had suffered the first time had been horrible enough. As she watched the two suborned ships tear into the rest of the fleet, she knew that if she returned to the Citadel in such fashion again, she would first be tortured, then executed. No, she would use her sister's own tactics against her; she would travel to this world of humans and....ugh....use them. Turn them against her sister and destroy her once and for all.
Once she was sure that her sister was focused on her fleet, she quietly activated the thrusters and pointed her escape pod at the strange, annoying wet mudball known as Earth.

Lantern established communications between the ships the Titans controlled. Strange could've figured out the communications array eventually, but this saved time.
“Hey Titans,” Gardner said. “We've got this ship, looks like you've got that one.”
“We do indeed,” Cyborg's voice came back. “It wasn't easy, but we manged. Same for you guys, I hope?”
“We had a little help,” Nightwing said, “But yes.”
Adam Strange grinned tightly.
“I can use my ring to bolster both ships,” Gardner said. “It will help.”
“Let's do it, then!” Starfire exclaimed.

Aboard the Dreadnaught, the Titans had not yet finished mopping up the Gordanians. It was larger than the flagship, and had more Gordanian troops. There were also a couple other aliens, with strange, triangular heads and long whiplike arms that gave off an electric discharge.
It was with these aliens that the team had their trouble, as one of them wrapped one long tentacular arm around both Raven and Scarlet Wing. Both screamed; neither collapsed, but both were weakened and stumbled away.
Troia answered the challenge, though, wading in and pounding them down.
Wearily, Raven cradled Scarlet Wing in her arms and attempted to heal her as the others continued battling the Gordanians.
The Gordanian troops, as noted, were stronger than humans and had greater endurance, but they were also slow and not very bright. The Titans had faced threats of this caliber before, albeit not in this particular alien guise. The main problem was fatigue, as there were so many of them; it was a marathon, a test of endurance.
But the tide was slowly and surely turning their way.
Eventually, the ship rocked as the other vessels in the fleet returned Cyborg's fire, startling and distracting both sides. The fact that Cyborg was busy piloting the ship and using the weapons slowed the Titans down as well. But the outcome was still certain.
Beast Boy was in the form of a Gorilla now; he picked up two Gordanians and gave them a ruthless bear hug. They withstood it at first, but as they tried to break free they found that even their strength was not enough to break his grip. Eventually they began to panic as his iron grip constricted their chests. They were not, of course, human; but their physiology was similar enough that they breathed in more or less the same way.
Four other Gordanians surrounded the Changeling and prepared to fire, but Troia and Dagon took down one each, and the other two were knocked down by Kid Flash as he ran past.
The battle was long and wearying, and by the time it was over the Titans were nearly exhausted except for Kid Flash, who was merely hungry, as the demands of his super speed metabolism took their toll Raven and Scarlet Wing had not fully recovered, either. But eventually every last Gordanian was down, and every time one tried to get up, Kid Flash zipped by and knocked it down again.
Eventually he stopped before the others. “Cyborg is piloting the ship, attacking the fleet. Nightwing and Starfire are controlling the ship they're on. Just a matter of beating the other ships, now.”
“Oh, is that all?” Beast Boy said. “Well, that'll be a snap, right?”
“Easy on the sarcasm, BB. Lantern is helping to power up both ships, and if anyone wants to take advantage of his shielding and step outside...”
“I'll go,” Troia said.

“I believe that you can take it from here,” Adam Strange said. “I see one of your fellow Titans has flown out to help; so shall I.”
“I'll handle it,” Starfire agreed. She moved to the controls. There was a certain satisfaction in using her own sister's weapons against her fleet of evil.
“I don't need your shield Lantern,” Adam Strange said to Guy. “No offense.”
“None taken,” Gardner answered, “But it's still helpful anyway as a power boost.”
“As you say,” Strange said, not wanting to argue the point.
When he flew out into space, Troia noticed him and momentarily tensed, then relaxed as Gardner told her over the communications link that he was on their side. They swooped and darted about, Strange zapping the enemy ships, Troia literally pounding them.
Beast Boy, looking out a window, said it would make a great science fiction film; all it lacked was the sound effects and score. A few groaned at his humor, but none could disagree with the essential truth of it.
There were five enemy ships left....then three...then none.

“I'll call the Corps to clean this up,” Gardner said.
“Appreciated,” Nightwing answered, “But we'd like to take at least one ship back to Earth for salvage.”
“And as a prize of war,” Starfire added. “Unless you'd like to argue with that?”
“Theoretically, as a Corps member, I should argue against it.” Lantern shrugged. “But the truth is, Earth has harvested alien tech before, after the Apokalypse invasion. Makes a nice trade for the launch they sabotaged, too. Let's transfer these goons to one of the other disabled ships, first.” He shook Nightwing's hand. “Not bad, kid. Not bad at all.”
“We had help,” Nightwing admitted. “And not just from you.”
“True enough.” Lantern turned to Strange. “Been away from Earth a long time, huh? Well, welcome home.”
Adam Strange smiled. “Looking forward to it.”

The two Titan controlled ships docked, and they helped Gardner transfer the prisoners to the dreadnaught. The others were glad to meet Strange, and Beast Boy cracked some jokes about his 50s sci fi outfit. Strange laughed willingly enough.
“It will be interesting to see how Earth has changed,” he said, as they pointed the ship at Earth and kicked in the drive.
“Oh man,” Beast Boy said. “You have no idea...”

-Epilogue- Blackfire's escape pod landed in a heavily forested area in upstate New York. Scowling, she slunk through the heavy trees, frowning at the strange agriculture. The last time she had been here, she hadn't studied the local environment. Now she was regretting that. Learning to adapt to this disgusting world would be difficult. But perhaps not as difficult as she thought. “Greetings,” a confident male voice said as she broke through a copse of trees. Blackfire clenched a fist, starbolt at the ready. “What do you want, human?” “Some of us have access to deep space telescopes and other scanning equipment,” the man said. “I saw you battle against the Titans. Most interesting. You are rival to the one called Starfire, are you not?” Blackfire wondered how the human could know that. “She is my sister,” she admitted, reluctantly. “A blood feud then? Interesting. I have a proposal, if you are willing to hear it.” Blackfire wanted to use humans for her own purposes, but she also wanted to be in control. The ability of this one to find her so easily after her emergency landing disquieted her. “I will listen, but promise nothing. My goals are my own.” “So they should be for any truly intelligent being.” the man agreed smoothly. “Aliens are not my favorite people, but the enemy of my enemy can be a useful ally. And if you want to take out Starfire, our goals are similar.” His voice turned meditative. “The Titans are not my primary concern, but I have fingers in many pots.” “Nor do I like humans much,” she admitted, wary but also somewhat impressed. “But if we can help each other....” “Exactly my thought,” the man said. “Come with me, and I will enable you to hide from Earth's authorities. I think you will find my plan of interest...” The EndLet us know what you think here!
