Living in the age of the DVDs, I thought I'd give a creator's commentary on the 3 part arc I wrote. I like to hide trivial piece of information in my writings. So here's most of it. There are some thing I won't touch on, since the trivia is way to esoteric.
Overall, I had two major focuses with this arc. First, to explore who Superman is (at least my interpretation of him). Secondly to give Superman a good challenge without restorting to the three default ‘weaknesses’ (Kryptonite, magic and red sun radiation).
I should note that I titled each arc, but it was David who came up with the idea to call the arc the "Never ending battle". Thanks Dave!

AoS #6
- The idea of using Chemo came rather late in the story assembling. I knew I wanted Superman to face two modern social problems, anti-American resentment and pollution. I felt Superman should face a villain, and Chemo fit perfectly…. Except… Honestly, I have a problem with the DCU Chemo. He always seemed to be a villain who’s as content to stand around in a catatonic state or go on a rampage in the city. My new origin gave him a few new frightening powers and motive, but it didn’t take away from the original Chemo.
- Doctor Liam Levias. I felt I really need to use a character with the LL initials for Superman to interact with. There is another hidden message in his name. It’s hidden in inviso-text for those who might want to take a guess. So here it is: Liam is celtic meaning guardian and Levias is my shorthand for leviathan. So his name literally means the guardian of the monster.

- I was trying to be clever by making it seem like two thugs and a piece of paper are giving Superman a hard time.
- DA Allan Welles was a supporting character in the Vigilante’s series in the late 80s. I thought he deserved to have a DC2 introduction.
- The destruction of the chemical plant happened off-camera. It’s a bit of a cheat, but I think it created a completely surprising cliffhanger at the end of AoS #6.
- The full names of the thugs are: Karl Stern and Ivan Rosen. Highlight the inviso-text to find out who they’re named after: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, the inept thugs in Shakespear's Hamlet.
- Ivan claims he got beaten up by Batman and Huntress. Do you believe him? Highlight the inviso-text to find out if he was telling the truth: Check Batman #1 and New Outsiders #2
- When I was writing the last touches, I knew a few people might not buy Adrian’s speech. You never actually know how much time passed between Adrian’s speech and dismissal. Remember that Adrian and Allan both noted that the charges were seen ridiculous, which might have been shared by the judge. So did Adrian’s speech move the judge? Did Allan drop the charges? Did the judge just look for an excuse to dismiss the charges? Did Luthor pay off the judge? It’s whatever you want it to be.
- Doctor Kitty Faulkner is better known to some in the DCU as RAMPAGE!
