Outstanding! Great job KSM. Some very classic stuff that you put in here and I ate it up. Nothing like a little Shakespeare to get the ol' blood pumping in the morning. Really great work B! You have a lot to be proud of.

Thanks, Brian! Actually, it's Herman Melville from Moby Dick. ;D But it's got Shakespeare written all over it. I had to take a little extra time and make sure I got this one right (at least I hope I did) as it is very important to events unfolding throughout the rest of my run on the title.

Another outstanding issue! I see Krell becoming a constant thorn in Arthur's side! Humans living in an undersea city??? I loved it all & that cover is absolutely amazing! Simple, yet powerful...

Thanks for the comments on the cover guys. I had more trouble with this cover than any of the others but I'm glad to see that it worked out. Next month's on the other hand will be an easy one because it's the Aquaman cover I've always wanted to draw! Okay, shutting up now before I start spewing spoilers. ;D Here is a little history on the Krell character. I really wanted to add a new bad guy for Aquaman that could match him on the same level as a leader, but without it becoming too political. Sort of a Lex Luthor-type. Naturally a fan would think of Orm as a close rival in that arena, but the Ocean Master character hasn't always been very clear or well-defined. Sometimes he's an evil submarine captain, sometimes he's a would-be contender for the crown, and more recently sometimes a sorceror. So I split them up. When you see Orm he will be in a much closer proximity to Arthur as a king. Krell became the more Nemo-type villian. And the sorcery part will show up in the form of a character who has appeared so far in name only, Merganys. But yeah, after the events of this issue, Captain Krell will definately be back.

To be truly honest there, Brandon, I really had no real urge to 'pick' up your book. I like the Aquaman character but I had a fixed idea of what I wanted to read (any books not by me) and a few select ones... I skimmed your #0, and then didn't read #1, #2 or #3, but then I thought, I like this dude, so I might as well give him the benefit of the doubt and check it out, and dude, how was I amazed. It's amazing and cinematic, and you can feel for the characters. It's the most emotional, personal, action packed rollercoaster ride on the site, and I'm digging what you're doing. And I'm actually really hard to please, no matter what I say. Brava. Encore.

Thanks Charlie! I appreciate the kind comments.
As I've probably said before, I sorta did this the hard way starting with an unknown villain and a version of Aquaman (already not exactly the most popular character) that hasn't been seen in awhile. But, I was hoping it would pay off in the long run so I'm really glad to see any positive feedback on what I'm doing. ;D
Things will continue to build over the arc and I hope to be able to throw a few more fun things into the mix before I'm done. Look for some big developments next issue!

that was a good ending to a weird story. Sad to see a character die though, you know Krell will be back really soon.

Thanks, Big. I did a lot of back and forth on whether the character should die, but in the end I figured the only way to properly set up the rivalry between Krell and Aquaman would be to have some blood spilled. Sure Krell is envious of him and views him as the obstacle to his ultimate goal, but there needed to be some true hatred for the not-so-good Captain to commit the unspeakable acts he's about to against Arthur.

Ack! Okay, I think I need to make a comment here. I woke up from my nap today to catch the last half of an episode of Star Trek ENTERPRISE. It was an episode where they apparently explain the difference between the prosthetic forehead Klingons and the non-prosthetic forehead Klingons from the classic show, and one of the Klingons was named Admiral Krell! Let me state now that I had no idea that this character existed and the process I used to come up with Krell's name for this story followed a whole other train of thought (revolving around strong or sinister sounds in language). I brainstormed most of the Aquaman stories you read now a few years back and even remember doing a Google search at the time to make sure the name hadn't been used. So, I'm not sure which came first, but I'm going to chalk it up to similar ideas coming out of the collective creative subconscious (y'know, when certain themes run through movies having a bunch of war movies go into production at the same time, etcetera). Not that anything would ever come of the two things but I thought I'd go ahead and address it here anyway.

Right. Not cool. I did my homework and everything! I think the best thing I could do is go through and re-edit it all into a different spelling like "Crell". Hm, might do that. I swear I didn't gank it from Star Trek! Here's the exact line of thought on the name IIRC. I wanted an alliterated name like Captain Cook or Captain Kirk because they worked well and had some punch phonetically. I was really into Farscape at the time so I started thinking of Commander Crais (one of the bad guys on that show) and that led somehow to thinking of the fake swear word on the show which is "frell". It all got mixed up and became the name "Krell". Oh yeah, and I was revisiting some 80s fantasy movies at the time so I think Krull was in there too. What do you think, should I change the spelling or leave it be? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Keep it! I believe you when you say it was a mistake, and it would ridiculous if you changed everything because of something you watched AFTER. That's like writing a story and then changing all the characters because one has the name John!

I say definately keep it.
The name sounds perfect.
Besides, it was used much earlier than ST, way back in the 50s in that seminal s/f film, Forbidden Planet--- Krell was the name of a vanished alien race that managed to harness all its negative energy and feelings, manifesting a weird Id-creature that destroyed them, and then went after Leslie Nielsen and Robbie the Robot...

That's right.
And I'm a HUGE fan of sci-fi from that time period so I'm really surprised that I forgot about that (well, it's probably been a good 4 years or better since I last watched that one). I must have subconsciously filed that one away in my brain under cool names to use later. ;D
That makes it okay then. It goes from Enterprise gank to cool homage to one of the best SF movies ever. Uh yeah, that's the way I meant it all along. *ahem*

I very much enjoy the start of this series. I'm not as comfortably familiar with Aquaman as I am some of the other heroes but these first issues have gotten me up to speed very well. I like your writing style and I find Arthur an interesting character as written by you. I'll continue to follow Aquaman's adventures.
