It won't be up until later due to a delay. But I bet it'll be worth the wait!

This was the best issue, yet! I really liked the way you blended Aqualad of the earlier years, with both the suped up version and the cartoon version. Black Manta was right on, and your ending made me shout out loud. I was hoping he would eventually appear. Practically flawless! My number one pick of the week.

Thanks Charlie. Yep. All the major players are in place now and most of the major bad guys introduced. As you can see some unholy alliances have already formed and it's going to get difficult after awhile to tell exactly who is getting played and who has the upper hand.

Wow...the DC2 Black Manta is incredibly cool! I love this Garth as well - I like the way his other powers/skills are coming in earlier (healing etc). And I must say that the covers rock. I can't wait for next issue, and the plot points to tie together. Great work!

Thanks Apprentice and I'm glad you liked it! On an aside, I'm glad the term "missiles" has fit for the readers so far. I debated using "torpedoes" but it sounded wrong somehow so I was hoping I wasn't making a nautical faux pas in my terminology. As for Garth's powers. I hope to have a chance to examine his role more in the coming issues and how his being a magick user really sets him apart in Atantis. It is a city of dichotomies so there are a lot of contrasting viewpoints and clashing beliefs. I've hinted around but to be clear the Atlanteans use an ancient, advanced technology that most of them no longer fully understand so it seems almost mystical to them. On the other hand they are very fearful of true magick as it has always been accompanied by dark times in Atlantis (the reign of the Dark Kings, Shalako's betrayal, etc.). So Garth's abilities and willingness to use this power is something that could be a problem for most of the people from Atlantis. Coming in the issues ahead! I switch gears again and take Aquaman back out of Atlantis, we meet a new villain, we find out new things about Arthur's past, get to see more of Aqualad in action, discover some dark secrets about Mergannys, and some other crazy surprises so stick around! It just keeps getting wilder from here on out until we finally reach the IXE!

Aquaman #5 That was cool! I was really sweating it for Mera there… all signs pointed to something really bad happening to her & the bun in her oven. Whew! But hey, you promised death & we only had one near-death with Javen. I thought maybe Vulko was going to bite it at the last minute, but noooo! Ah well! I liked that you hinted at a past between Arthur & Manta, hmmm I wonder! And what’s this, Orm a good-guy? The Ocean Master pulling Manta’s strings? What’s going on??? Once again Brandon, you’ve got me ‘hooked’, I can’t wait for more! Too bad for DC that their new Aquaman isn’t nearly as interesting! Ramon, mad props on the cover dude… killer!

Er, yeah, I was hoping no one would call me on that one. ;D
In all honesty, I write the solicits way before I write the issues, and up until the day before I wrote it, Javen was on the chopping block. But then I realized that I could accomplish more with having Aqualad step in at the last second and work his mojo, setting all of that up for tensions and story points later on. But yeah, since everyone was worried about Mera last issue, something that was unintentional actually (ha), I thought I'd play it up a bit. SO it turned out to be a red herring but it worked out I think.
Yes, there is, as you know, a past between Aquaman and Black Manta that will be revealed in The Legend of Aquaman (or Aquaman: Year One or whatever you decide to call it)! So look for that somewhere in the near future! Well, not you Scott because it's your story but everyone else, look for it!
The Ocean Master conundrum will also be addressed in the the Year One mini but for the moment it would seem that something is amiss, yes?
Thanks for the comments, Scott. Hope to keep the fun rolling here so check out next month's special oversized issue!

I gotta say I prefer this Aquaman over the DC one by a mile (I've got no idea what they're doing there). Great to see the old Aqua-villains back and written well. By the way, missiles and torpedoes are two different weapons and a submarine can fire both so you're safe there (ex-Navy guy here). In the future I hope to see some surface stories though I know you have a lot to deal with under the waves. Also, is Aquaman known to /familiar with the other heroes of the DC2? Or are we in for some "first meeting" stories?

Thanks Batarang! Yeah, part of my motivation for coming up with these stories was due to my frustration with DC's continual revivals and new directions for Aquaman. I don't believe there is anything really wrong with the character other than that there aren't any real, solid Aquaman stories being told, and haven't been for a really long time. So, here's my modern take on the classic version of the hero. Thanks for the clarification on the missile/torpedo question! There will be above-the-waves stories for the next three issues and will have big guest-star in Issue 9. I think that Aquaman is known to the other heroes and may have crossed paths with a few, but I'm not going to give a solid answer on that until I go over the events of the new few issues a little more closely. And then, after Issue Ten and our big event running through all the titles that month, he will be MUCH more involved with the surface heroes. So stick around!

Been reading through all the Aquaman for the first time and LOVED this one. Especially Black Manta. Liked how he knew Arthur when they were younger.

Thanks. ;D
The backstory between Manta and Orin was something I was adapting partially from Lantern Lad's Aquaman origin story from another site in hopes he would run it here as a Year One but that's something we never got off the ground. Happy you enjoyed the story!
