It was a good solid beginning. I'm not a huge fan of either Aquaman or Atlantis, but I am very intrigued. I ended up enjoying this way more then I thought. Great job!!!!

Ditto. You've set your scene well, and normally I skip settings and move right along to action and characters. You've presented a very rich quasi-mythological background which certainly fits the character. Waiting for him to appear on stage in #1!

Thanks for the comments and kind words! Let it be known that this is also my introduction to fan fiction and first written work I've posted online. It was an odd place to start the story but as Dragonbat said I felt had to set up the world and history of Atlantis to tell these stories. If you've already read the story before reading this then I encourage you to go back and check out the updated cover. I was in a pinch this week and had to put up a temporary but the finished one is now posted.

I am an Aqua-fan and I thought this was GREAT! It was very well written and sets us up for what should be some great story-lines. I can hardly wait for the next one.

Not too shabby for your first foray into fan fiction, friend! (Ugh! Sorry!) Special credit for the use of Jacobean syntax (not as easy to write as it looks!), and for the subtle Lovecraftian and Caycian undertones, providing a rich and atmospheric backstory for Aquaman's often underappreciated mythos. Lots of story potential here!

Wow, solid work. Aquaman is such a complex character, and at the same time one hard to make convincing/interesting, and I think this a great start to setting up his world. Great job!

So I sit here taking another sick day and playing catch up with a stack of virtual comics in front of me: I like the set-up. I have always liked Aquaman but never liked to be bogged down with the history lesson of Atlantis so I was hesitant to read this but like I said I liked it. How much of this parallels Peter David's Chronicles of Atlantis? I ask because I have never read the story. The pacing was good and ending with: "The King of the Sixth Age would be a champion like unto no other as protector to all of the inhabitants of the oceans and his feats would know no equal in the millennia to follow. And even the surface world would know his deeds and called him the Aquaman. Great would be his struggles and victories as he led Atlantis through it darkest hours and its Final Days… " That just for lack of a better pun "hooked me" Great job I am off to read the next issue!

Thanks John!
I used some PAD's characters and history (post-sinking) as a framework and made a few changes: like making Tritonis more like the mythical 'Little Mermaid'-type of Atlantis, making Shalako's corrupting influence and betrayal a little more direct, and trying to make Atlan's motivations a little more clear. PAD's just one source of inspiration here as I tried to blend as many versions and visions of Atlantis as possible: Edgar Cayce's readings, Erich Von Daniken, Hendrix's "A Merman I Should Be", Robert Anton Wilson, the Aquaman Xbox game, the version from the JUSTICE LEAGUE cartoon, Disney's Admiral Byrd-ish vision, Donovan's "Atlantis", and of course the original Plato myth. I'm a big fan of Atlantis Myth first and came to Aquaman through that so that's why I wanted to play up that angle more at the beginning. I'm not really writing to a specific Aquaman audience as what I'm doing is such a big mix-up of other things (Atlantis and sea related) so I have no idea what reactions (if any) I'll have to my run on the character. Ha. Hopefully I can put this all together into something for people to enjoy. I guess we'll see. ;D

Well I think you are doing a wonderful job Brandon. Being a fan of something like you are with Atlantis myth shows in your writing. I have always believed in writing what you know and like, not what you think others will like. By doing it this way you shouldn't have to worry about a specific Aquaman audience. Heck you might draw in some non-fishy friends along the way!

I thought this was an excellent opening issue! True, I'm late to the party and have to play catch-up, but what a wait to bait a new reader! Anticipating my chance to plow through the rest of the issues, now. I'm an AQUAMAN fan and aren't disappointed. Good work on that cover, too! I think that's one of the more neat aspects of this site, in that each series is adorned with its own artwork. Keep up the good job!

Thanks a lot, fanman! We do a whole lot of work on these covers so it's nice to know that people enjoy them. ;D The first arc shows Aquaman in a basic underwater adventure against a new villain (who I hope you'll like). And then the new story coming out now is back to Atlantis with familiar faces and classic bad guys! I certainly hope you give the rest of the series a try.

You certainly have your Antlantean { DCU } mythology down.
Any chance the people of Thierna Na Oge amd Nuada Silverhand exist in DC2 continuity?
IMO the 1986 mini is the finest treatment this character has ever received... not unlike Perez' treatment of Wonder Woman. This mini delved into the mystical/mythical aspects of Atlantean heritage and got him out of that { forgive me } STUPID orange costume!!!
Well, good luck on this one as I continue to read.

Sorry I didn't respond to this sooner. Glad you enjoyed this issue. I've mixed in a lot of Atlantean myth so it's good to hear it works. I've not really expanded much on the outer civilizatons yet, partly because the story hasn't called for it and partly because I don't wan t to overcrowd the ocean floor with cities, etc. I'm trying to make the twin cities of Atlantis more unique and to focus on the events there. BUT, that said, there may be an occasion to have Nuada Silverhand get in on the action in the second year of stories. I know there are some strong feelings about the orange and green costume, but it is the classic version (for over 50 years!) and I wanted to start with that. There may be, however some changes in store for Aquaman and we'll definately be seeing some new looks for him in the near future (Issue 7 and beyond).
