Stellar job on the cover as usual, Ramon! A really quirky theme on this one but it works great!

I really dig this groovy cover! Especially the tambourine and the donut. Not a lot of people know this, but I am a virtuoso of that under-appreciated instrument, the tambourine... Love the Adam Westiness, too.

Great issue from cover to end. There are wonderful things going on here that obviously have far reaching consequences and I loved every minute of it. However it was also kind of sad for me since this is your last issue, Charlie. I'm sure the next person to step up will be great, but for me personally, I shall miss the great writing you have brought to this book. Hope to see you back on it someday.

Not if I can help it! Hoo hum! We'll see. I do have to deliver The Laughing Man and also... Knightfall. I'll be back to the character eventually. If you want more of my writing of Batman... The Question Quarterly is out in three months!

I enjoyed the issue, however, I got lost here and there with who was saying what...
I did enjoy it though! It was truly trippy, man!

This was a great note to go out on, Charlie! Probably your best issue of Batman, with some good characterizations, nice twists and great pacing--- at first (not being a Metallica fan), the quotes seemed out of place and annoying, but they really helped to build to a surprising denoument. Also, I appreciated your pun about classic rock in the first scene with Bullock and Essen (Beatles to "Wings?"). Clever! Sorry to see you leave this title.

Definately the best issue of "Batman" yet! Everything about it was great! What a surprise ending! I really liked the whole issue from beginning to end. Great job!

Good ending to the story. This title has a very different flavor than Detective. This seems more "lighter" in tone where Detective gives us a more grim Batman. Also, are the two titles taking place in different timelines? This title seems to be based more in Batman's early career where in Detective it seems like more events have already taken place. I happen to like the differences. Very interesting take on the Bruce/Alfred relationship. It's good to bring a new perspective to something we all know (or think we know). With a new writer I'll be interested to see the direction the title goes.

Great conclusion! Loved the metallica quotes, the action - especially the giant robot - and the idea of wireless resusitation.
Also - being a huge Saw fan - I loved the little 'game' Brown had Bullock play.

Great conclusion! Loved the metallica quotes, the action - especially the giant robot - and the idea of wireless resusitation. Also - being a huge Saw fan - I loved the little 'game' Brown had Bullock play. This was another one of those arcs that I had overarching plans for beyond the issues themselves. Little known fact, but I have about a dozen unseen Batman issues that continue on from the first Bat-run I did, that are no longer viable due to the changes in continuity that have come hence. I'm not particularly saddened by this fact as I wrote them when I was... what, 15? 16? So it's no great loss. But the Cluemaster/Riddler thread was going to continue into this end of year storyline that would come together before the IXE and then I'd have been able to leave peacefully, instead of the abrupt leaving I did due to being bogged down... with everything. Glad you enjoyed this. I remember writing it, and it was a fun experience, especially due to that Ramon Villalobos cover. Awesome.

Great couple of issues! The Riddler, when done well, is a great villain for Batman--cerebral, insidious, with a real reason to banter with the World's Greatest Detective and not just exchange blows. This plan was particularly engaging (I always enjoy it when the villain REALLY gets away and demonstrates their true threat to the reader). As a musical luddite, I can't say that the Metallica quotes (which I identified as such only upon skimming past letters) worked for ME, but they added a certain roguish charm to the chapters. I enjoyed the organization of the scenes and the epilogues, ironically, I have access to the whole sweep of the site and having read some of these issues "out of order" I had a good time ducking back and seeing such intelligent foreshadowing. Cheers!

Cheers! Didn't realise I missed this! Musical interludes were a stylistic trend around this time-- I think in part inspired by dragonbat's use of them in her family of titles-- and I think I abused it horrifically. They added nothing but it was an experiment, and I think that even the worst ones are worth trying. The Riddler is a really interesting villain but I don't think I do him justice. Same as when I've talked about using the likes of Etrigan, they take a certain literary edge that I think you either have or you have to invest in learning, and when it comes to fan fiction, I don't think I have it in me to fully commit to the world of riddles or a rhyming dictionary. Maybe one day though! In fact, I know when, and it's coming in a couple of years in Justice League. No spoilers! A lot of what I intended for my original run on Batman-- the focus on Ra's Al Ghul, the mentions of the Lazarus Pyramid (or at least, my intention to mention), the training of Bruce Wayne-- are seeing development over in the 10YL stuff, and a project I've been trying to get off the ground called The Dark Knight. Right now, my focus is on getting Justice League to #100, so we'll have to see what happens.
