Matches! Love that guy!
This was agonizingly short Grant... I wanted more! I love this kind of story. A good ol' fashioned mystery... And you've given us a whole lot of exposition... And I'm betting we get a whole lot more next issue! While there are minor bits I, personally, am questioning (little, teeny, tiny, silly detaily bits), this was a smooth read, and written well, seriously, next issue should be really cool!

I really liked the hard-boiled writing style, and enjoyed this first installment. My only real quibble is that I found the naming of the victim after two Sin City characters distracting, but I suspect others will appreciate the reference.

What a great way to introduce us to your work! I swear I could hear the soundtrack for this playing in my head the entire time I was reading it. Very noir and very cool. My only little question is one of continuity. It's already been established in Batman/Detective Annual #1 that Penguin's name was given to him by other mob bosses and that he hates the name... despises it, so that was a little jarring to see it retconed out. However, that did nothing to stop this from being an awesome beginning to a great story. I'm looking forward to the rest of this, as well as your run on Batman, more now then ever.

Thanks guys!! I know the style is a little different that maybe you're used to, and I appreciate the comments!
As for the Penguin...he isn't really being retconed. His history is being embellished upon. By the end of the City of Crime, the name "Penguin" isn't something that Cobblepot wants attached to his name. :-) Without giving anything away, there is more to the Penguin than first appears in the first two issues of City of Crime. Continuinty will remain intact.

I love Sin City. ;D I also named two streets after two of my fav. Batman writers....

There is lots more in issue two, way more action, more Penguin, more Matches, more more more. Matches! Love that guy! This was agonizingly short Grant... I wanted more! I love this kind of story. I liked the O'Neil and Kane references.
Original character stories work best when they provide new perspectives on the canon characters, which is exactly what this story does. The view of the city as a whole, Bullock, and our friend "Matches" Malone were very clever indeed. I like it. I like.
I doubt Penguin is our killer, but he probably knows and wishes he didn't.....
Others have remarked on the hard-boiled style. For me that particular sub genre depends entirely on the skill of the writer. Fortunately, we've got a very good writer here.

I liked it. It was a good intro to the story. It was a mix between hard boiled crime fiction with a splash of noir in it.
The "voice & style" used to tell the story was an approach I am usually not fond of but here I think it worked well.
I think having Bullock be a somewhat honest cop here is cool. When he was introduced way back when, he wasn't a bad cop. I like how it is easy to see how over time he was worn down and eventually looked for an easier way out. Also introducing Matches Malone should be fun. I am a fan of all of Bruce Wayne's 'persona's'
The style is bold and different then what has been seen on the site before.
Having already seen issue #2, I can concur that the action is stepped up a notch and the intensity begins to boil over.
Finally, if you liked the cover (like I did) you will love whats been done for the next couple of issues!
Great job Grant and a grand entrance into the DC2 universe! Welcome home!

Thanks John!! And thanks for taking the time edit the series.
Yeah action picks up considerably in issue 2, slows down a wee bit in issue 3, and then the last two issues hit the gas hard and heavy.
I love Matches. I wish Batman writers would use Batman's master of disguise skills more often.

My jaw is still on the floor. Not only is this a wonderful story, but the writing style is darn-near breathtaking. Truly unlike many other fics I've read over the years. I always find it interesting to see the big characters through the eyes of the smaller ones, and I think you've really got something special here. See you next issue, for sure!

THIS IS GOTHAM! No doubt about it Ive finally found someone who I really think has captured the essence of Gotham and not messed it up...yet. Seriously this is how I think anything to do with Batman and Gotham should be written. Since I dont really read Batman that much Im not fimilar with people who are villians or heroes in super-powered way, so standard human characters aren't fimiliar with me which is awesome cos they seem more real and Im not comparing them to the comic versions. More, more, more.
Also will there be more City of Crime stories revolving around our reporter friend...maybe something to do with the Clown Prince of Crime

Wow...thanks so much Susan! I'm glad you like it. You certainly nailed my intent there. I wanted, in part, to be able to show Gotham city from fresh eyes. Batman's view is familar to most of us - from Adam West camp to Frank Miller grit. Same with most of his supporting cast, all of whom find disfigured villians in this totally corrupt city unsurprising. So I wanted to be able to show this world, in as much as I can, through the eyes of an outsider....albeit in this case, a fairly jaded outsider who is part Socrates, part wino. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series!

Well, I guess that depends if the sarcastic bastard makes it out of this story alive! ;D I actualy really like Mickey, even though he is pretty much a jerk alot of the time. Then again, I find I tend to prefer characters who are deeply flawed - John Constantine, Ahab, Moon Knight and so on...including Batman himself....not sure what that says about me, though! Anyway, to answer your question without answering it so not to give way where City of Crime is going....the characters and events of this story will have a major impact in Batman and 'Tec in very near future! As for the Joker....well you know what they say...can't keep a good clown down! (actually, no one says that. It's just cheesy)

I am ashamed it's taken me so long to read this entire issue (I read it in proposal-form months ago)--- boy, did I miss out!
This was just a great story, told with an accomplished literary skill. This story made not only the characters come alive for, but Gotham the city as well! It had atmosphere in spades, a Dashiel Hammett way with words, and it ended before I knew it.
One of the best Batman fan fic I've ever read, and a terrific cover.
What a way to make your debut, Grant!
I can't wait to dig into #2!
