Um... I don't like how the continuity is questionable in this book. I LOVE THE WRITING. I LOVE MATCHES MALLONE... But... Stuff doesn't add up. I'm sure it MIGHT tie into a nice little bow as the series finishes, and I'm enjoying the writing (I'm thinking that post IXXE... Matches Mallone might be back in a big way, you get my drift ) but that's the only thing that keeps from CLICKING with me. But I love the writing And Frank The Tank... That's just so damn good.

Um... I don't like how the continuity is questionable in this book. I LOVE THE WRITING. I LOVE MATCHES MALLONE... But... Stuff doesn't add up. I'm sure it MIGHT tie into a nice little bow as the series finishes Tsk tsk. Where's the faith in the author? You think I read all the past Batman stories just for my health?? LOL. Relax. I am so not giving anything away in the letters page, but keeping reading. It ALL fits together by issue five. There is a VERY good reason why the Penguin is demanding he be called the Penguin at this point. Not everything is necessarily as Mickey Fynn thinks it is. You're just going to have to keep reading. I'm not showing my cards until I have to. ;D But to help you one peice together - by the time Batman and the Penguin met face to face in present continuity, Bats knows ALL about Cobblepot. Batman doesn't just pull that info out of the air, and he doesn't have a magic button on his computer in the cave that magically pulls up criminal profiles. Oswald is someone who, as we've seen in this issue, Batman has been keeping an eye on for a long time by melting into the underworld as Matches Malone. Thanks! I love Matches. It would be wicked if Matches appears post IXXE.

I don't think Matches is too happy about Wayne Enterprises being involved in this.....
Loved the Bloodsport/UFC angle.

WOW!............what an issue! I love reading this stuff because I don't even like the main character and yet I love to read about him. Thats good writing!
Also only having recently got into DC I didn't know who Matches Malone was until you said in the post above and Im so glad because I never saw that coming. I just love this and although I believe its in continuity even if it wasn't I wouldn't care cos its so damn good.

I have to agree with Grant here. There is a lot going on that hasn't been revealed yet. Oh boy, there is some stuff coming up that is sure to be talked about which will have nothing to do with what name Cobblepot goes by.
As for this issue- I don't think a damned thing happened here did it? Looking over it again I would say no. So why was this such a fine read? Because Grant has a way of pulling you into the story and you quickly get engrossed by the Bat world through Fynn's eyes. That's what drives this tale in my opinion!
Great job!

Another top notch issue! Excellent Penguin, and Matches. Yes, I have to admit that I'm also holding my breath like Charlie (call it being an over protective parent when it comes to this site), but I am kicking back and enjoying the ride. I've got the faith in you Sir, because so far you've shown us a terrific story that sucks you right in!
5 stars!

Thanks!!
Ok, I will say this one thing about the Penguin's continuity worriers, although it won't help much at this point. Well it might if you can figure it out.
I will say that Oswald has a very twisted sense of vanity. Every character in Batman's orbit, like Batman himself, is plagued with deep obsessions. Johnathan Crane is obsessed with fear. The Riddler with puzzles. The Joker...well his big obession is with Batman himself.
But what about the Penguin? well, when he is played for laughs, his fetish is birds. So he does stupid bird themes crimes, talks in with stupid bird puns etc etc. but if you don't play him for laughs, I think his obsession becomes something much different....and nastier. He is obsessed with his own appearance. He is completely narcissistic, and yet has this horrible self loathing because he is so ugly looking. As a result Oswald wants one thing above all else - respect. He wants to be respected and feared. So the one thing he CANNOT stand is being embarrassed, being shown up and more than anything else, being made fun of. He hates that like he hates nothing else. All of this plays into his circumstances in City of Crime #2, and will be even further explored and made more explicit, when we see him again a few issues down the road.
Clear as mud?

I think everybody who's whining about the whole Cobblepot/Penguin name-game needs to chill out. If Grant says there's a reason why he doesn't like the name in current DC2, and we'll find out by the end of this story, then let's wait until the end of said story to see if we should crucify the guy.
Okay, I'm off the soapbox and back to reviewing. John's right: not a lot happens in this issue, but man, what does happen sure does make you cringe. Frank gets kidney-punched 'til he bleeds! Yowch! And the thought of your least-favorite picture being used for your obit isn't all that great either. ;D
