FREAKING SWAMP THING!!!!!!!!!!! ;D
I had the pleasure of reading this a while back. Kevin has started this tale with a bang! The Challs are dead??? Multi-man is a really bad guy! This story has all the ingredients of another great DC2 epic! The Challengers of the Unknown are treated like the classic characters they are, with a fresh new twist! Issue #2 adds to that when.....well you will just have to wait and see! Alas, with the epic that is IXE I wonder if the heroes living on borrowed time show up? What do you think Kev?

Wow is all I can say about this issue!
I loved the use of the Swamp Thing and it looks like it's up to him and his-soon-to-be companion June Robins II to find out exactly where (and when) the Challs are.
Looking forward to #2!

Thanks for the kind words Roman and T.Fan. I know a lot of writers say that "X"book has always been the one that they have wanted to write/draw all their life but really I have been waiting almost 30 years to write this story. As a kid I always liked the more esoteric heroes that didn't have the big following that Superman or Batman had. Heroes such as the Atom. Hawkman and of course the Challengers of the Unknown. Issues #81 -87 ( along with Super Team Family #8-10) of the Challengers series have been prized possessions of mine since I bought them new on the stand. When this series was abruptly ended with #87 after an Epic Time Traveling Adventure with Rip Hunter I was simply devastated! My 13 year old mind didn't know about the cost of producing a comic book or that it required a certain number of readers to keep any title going. I was just mad that my favorite book was now gone! I have re-read these comics Hundreds of times over the years and I have always wonder 'What If?" What would have happened next? Would June and Ace get back together or would she go with Rocky? Was Swamp Thing and Deadman going to stick around much longer? Just a lot of unanswered questions! And now, thanks to DC2 I have the opportunity to see what might have happened. True it's not the Direction that the book would have went in but hey I have had 28 years to think about it! Thanks for reading! Kevin

This was a great opening, Kevin. I was really excited to see Swamp Thing. You really do like these characters and it shows in your style. I'll be anxiously awaiting the next issue!

Thanks Circle! I'm glad you liked it! Just wait there's more excitement to come! I think a lot of People may have passed up the Challengers because they have no flashy powers or costumes BUT I think that is part of their charm. They're just semi-ordinary guys doing an extraordinary job!! ;D

I picked up a reprint of the Challengers first appearance (SECRET ORIGINS 80 PAGE GIANT?) And I loved that story! It was so awesome, with the cool Jack Kirby art and the weird out there story... Well sir, you've set out to write the Challengers of the Unknown, and this first issue? Damn. I wanted to read about my favourite heroes living on bored time but instead... SWAMP THING! And... Mystery! I love mystery! This is a tight story, and I'm gonna' read the next issue-- Next on my hit list... Blue Beetle!

I knew it was tricky having a first issue basically without the main characters in it but I felt that it was necessary for the flow of the entire story and to instill a sense of (like you said ) mystery. I also wanted to tell a story that wasn't simply laid out for the reader but also took a little guessing as to what would happen next. Don't worry House, the Challengers are on the way!

cool first issue. I'm not really a fan of the CotU or Swamp Thing, but it was a good read. Going to read the other issues, too.

Thanks Riz! I hope I can keep everyones interest long enough to at least read the first 8 issues as that is pretty much the first story arc with a few smaller arcs inbetween. Like I said earlier I knew the Challs were going to be a hard sale but I think that these guys have a great Adventurous feel to them and that If you tell an entertaining enough story that people will read it regardless of who the characters are. Besides maybe along the way I can convince a few of you non believers to come on over to the "Unknown" side!

Great work here, Kevin. This is a great bit of adventure fiction, but with so many other elements thrown in. You have used horror, suspense, mystery, and science fiction to great effect here to create the building blocks of an exciting story!
I think we have similar tastes in DC's offbeat heroes so it's really cool to have this type of story here at DC2. Awesome job, sir!

Thanks KSM! I have always liked the second or third tier characters better myself for some reason. Maybe it was because they weren't readily available and that some how made them more unique in my young mind!
