Okay! This issue was a real labor of love for me. There was some ground I wanted to cover with the Doom Patrol to get them to a place where I felt they really worked best and this was it. A huge thanks to Charlie and Chase for their awesome work on the first three issues and doing a tremendous job with their own takes on everyone's favorite oddballs. Lots of attention, research, and work went into this one (whether it shows or not, ha) so please let me know what you think. Did you like it? Hate it? Let me know! Also I wanted to draw your attention to this great piece of art... The artist is Jared Hindman and I found his awesome site while doing research for this issue. Go on over and check out his stuff!

White crayons? Flaming eyeballs? The Word? The Editor? At first I looked at the cover and went..."Hey wait a minute! Thats my girl Val on the cover. Thats weird!" Weird? I didn't know the half of it! Things looked bleak for the DP but then Cliff went on his journey through every incarnation of the Doom Patrol. I nearly jumped up and down while reading this. You started out with Paul Kupperberg's run. You had Val, Tempest, Lodestone and Karma. You even made reference to Kalki! Sure this incarnation got ruined when it tried to hard to compete with the X-Men but I loved it. Of course Grant Morison came along and everything before it got forgotten! You managed to touch on every revamp this team has had in a unique and very entertaining way! The way you used the Editor was reminiscent of what Morrison did in his Animal Man run but dare I say...you did it better! I don't want to say more for because of spoilers but everything about this was PERFECT! The use of the clickable links was genius! You managed to pull everything together and firmly adde a foundation for the DC2 version of this team to thrive for a long team on this site! Being a very proud owner of nearly every issue this team has ever appeared in (still missing 3 issues of My Greatest adventures) you managed to please one of the Doom Patrols biggest fans here! Thank you Brandon! I don't think giving this issue 5 stars is enough here but its as high as it goes! You know when I first came to this site over a year ago my first idea was to write the Doom Patrol instead of the Suicide Squad but I wasn't sure how to pull it off. After this issue my head is spinning with ideas! Thank you for doing what only a handful of 'real' comics have done over the years and thats entertain and inspire me. Thats why comics are the coolest right? Now I am anxiously awaiting what Mark has in store for this ongoing title!

I only read this because Romans Empire said it was great. Well, now I know he is not a liar.
The editor, the word, the incarnations, everything was perfect. PERFECT. Best thing on the site, really, I love the whole breaking-the-whatever-wall-between-reality-and-fiction-thing.

Obviously a lot of work went into this and I liked the use of hyperlinks, and the mentions of the previous Patrols (although I hate to think how confusing it must be to readers unfamiliar with the previous DPs. Having said that, I was a bit disappointed to see that Arcudi's version didn't seem to get a mention). I think the Editor idea suffered from being a bit too much like Morrison's final Animal Man issue, and I have to confess that the ending itself left me slightly confused with the revised Infinity Projector bit.

Thanks a lot for commenting guys. John: Wow. Thanks! I worked hard to try to pull this off. It was a brain bender for me to write as well keeping all of this straight. Maybe I went too metafiction or maybe I'm not cut out to write team books. Either way this was trickier to write than most of what I've done here. I worked on it for a month and still turned it in late! But if this inspired some ideas in you about Doom Patrol, well, that's really about the best compliment a writer can get I think. Thank you. Charlie: I know. Zoom: Thanks! I don't know about best thing on the site but I'll take a 5 star. Mark: I knew you'd be hard to please on this one! I know what a huge fan you are of these characters and I really appreciate your reading and commenting. This whole story is really a big tribute to Grant Morrison's early Vertigo work and I liberally pulled pieces from both of his groundbreaking runs on Animal Man and Doom Patrol. From reality-bending aliens, to Crisis 2, to the Wizard of Oz stuff, to his various references to experimental authors and chaos magick, to the big ole metafiction "special appearance". I also through in stuff from others places and tried to keep from treading too heavily on what had been done before and do something original. Yeah, if you are walking into this as an uninitiated Doom Patrol fan you are going to be getting hit with a LOT of reference info, but I also tried to include some genuine character stories there too with Cliff and Steve for there to be a "real" story to follow as well. I did skip Arcudi's Patrol entirely. I had an afterthought of having Gar wearing a Jost t-shirt or something when he showed up, but in all honesty, that run was the most removed from the original Doom Patrol idea and would have been the hardest to tie in. And with the page count climbing I didn't want to try to squeeze in anything more. Sorry to disappoint you on this one but I hope you can see why I made this decision. As for the ending, I tried to be a little vague while laying out a quick timeline. I left it open though for writers coming after me (*ahem*you!*ahemahem*) to have an open field to write in backstory and play with the characters for their stories. Again, thank you for commenting and can't wait to see what you come up in the next issue.

Finally had a chance to read this. Now I have to state that:
A. I'm not the biggest fan of the Doom Patrol. B. Except for Animal Man, I've never cared for anything Morrison has done.
With that being said, I would just like to slap Brandon on the back for being daring and creative, and giving us a very cool and bizarre look to this group. Characterization was great, and since I was a fan of Animal Man, The Editor was a terrific nod.
More importantly, this issue showed that you are more then just a find craftsman with the paper and inks, but with the paper and pen, as well. Every time you put something on here, it reminds me how much you and your talents are missed.
I enjoyed it immensely. Great job, Brandon!

Somebody had referred to the series as being ongoing in the future. The schedule will stay loose on this book and the stories will post when the new ones come, so it will only be semi-regular. As mentioned though, Mark has planned on doing an issue which will be next up. A few others have expressed interest, and I have a few ideas I'd like to do at some point also. Here's a peek at what one of those could possibly be.

But, I think you could really do the character justice, Charlie. Really get inside his head.

Thanks a2uton! If I could have worked in Flex I would have, but there was a brief nod to the character when Cliff was looking around on Danny the Street... A smaller sign in the corner said “Become the Hero of YOUR Beach Today!”Maybe he'll pop up in a future adventure.

Well, two things...
#1. I thought the story was great. Honestly, one of the best fanfic comic reads I have ever had the pleasure of partaking. Very intelligent, literate, and very enjoyable.
#2. Compliments aside, I think the downside is that in four issues you completely boxed in any future writers from wanting to do this series. By mentioning every incarnation that DC1 threw out there, you have have established so much history that a future writer has to abide by it, making it very hard for anyone to pick up and write this series (which is likely why it has been so long).
That said though, it was a great mini-series read and has opened a door of interest for me to read more series around here...
Kudos.

Thanks for the comment and compliment!
I really hope however that cutting off every other writer from this series isn't the resulting effect. My intention was the opposite actually by trying to establish a history that could have the details filled in and also a complete cast to be easily drawn from for any future adventures. That said, I see how this crazy, topsy-turvy ride of a story could be off-putting to anyone wanting to participate in it. But hey, if these characters survived the Morrison/Pollack run at Vertigo I think they should be okay here. I do intend on remedying this very soon though in a follow-up story which will relaunch the book and take steps to solidify where the characters are, have been, and might go in the future, but still stay true to the daring and bizarre narrative established so far.
