This was a great great story. It was probably the most powerful character piece I have ever read at DC2. It kept me guessing, kept me glued to my screen....a very emotion outing by Brian.
Very well done young man.

Well, apart from the google thing not making any sense to me, a stunning issue. Riveting stuff that, as Grant's already remarked, kept the reader guessing all the way.

I wish I had been able to write a story this damn effective when I was on Batman. Well done, Brian. Well freakin' done

It was really good, it reminded me a lot of an old episode of BTAS where Batgirl was infected by The Scarecrow's toxin. If I wasn't a Scarecrow nut, I wouldn't have figured out what was going down so quickly. Four stars.

Brian... I gotta say you brought tears to my eyes with this one. BRAVO!

I knew it was some kind of trick...but I wasn't sure what kind. That I didn't figure out it was Scarecrow until almost the very end annoys me more than slightly.
Brian, of course, does a stellar job here, as always. *applause*

Thank you folks for the wonderful feedback on this issue. I wasn't sure how this one was going to be received. Grant, the fact that you called me young man tickles me more then anything. LOL! Mark, I probably should have put more of an explanation of what I meant with that Google line, but glad you enjoyed it. Charlie, you have written some awesome Batman stuff on this site, never sell yourself short! Mr. Clown, glad you enjoyed it, but I knew a few people would catch on right away. Ellen, I honestly don't know what to say. That it effected you like that means the world to me. Thank you for reading and responding. Jay, thank you very much, but please hold your applause, just throw money. This issue, as many of you know, was written for a personal reason. However, the end, the strength that Bruce had, to keep going on, well that part of the story was written because of the generosity and kindeness that all of you have shown me in the last month. Thank you all, from the very bottom of my heart. Also a very special thanks to Mr. Hodges for an awesome cover!

The constant italics clued me in to the cane's important, but I also thought it could have been Bruce's feeling of reliance on it. But I let my self get pulled into the story, and I loved it. Thought I'd say that again

actually Charlie, you're right on both counts. The cane represented Bruce's fear of self-reliance, as well as keeping him grounded in reality as much as possible.

I suffer from chronic pain myself b/c of spinal injuries... so I could put myself into Bruce's shoes almost with no problem... I understand this issue and am marveled at it.
Possibly the best work ever written at DC2.
Well done, Brian.

Thank you Jay-Z. I'm sorry to hear about your back problems, I've got some of my own as well, so I know it can't be easy.
As for the best work ever written, well, I appreciate the sentiment, tons, but there are way too many spectacular writers and way to many brilliant stories on these boards to even consider that notion. But the thought is very much appreciated.

I might have gone overboard, but this writing was stellar, Starlord. Keep it up... I really enjoyed it.

A surprise from the start -- I thought I missed an issue! -- and a good yarn all the way through. Don't worry, I got the Google thing more or less, and the emphasis on the cane was a good point...though perhaps you should have described it from the first, as I wasn't picturing something so ornate. You're just as tough as Bats, Brian!

Thanks Susan, and in retrospect, you're right, I should have described the cane in more detail. *blush* I hope so.

Wow. Just wow. I don't know what else to say. It was a great story! I loved the roof scene. The fact that Gordon heard him land. Touches like that are really proof a writer is paying attention. I marvel at your expertise Sir! Brian H's cover was perfect, moody and invoked a sense of helplessness. I also loved the fact at the end it was Bruce that brought him down too. Heh, I retrospect, I guess I do know what to say. Thanks Brian for a great story!

And than you for reading it, Roy! I think the part I enjoyed writing the most was Bruce struggling to take off the costume to get to Joker. I was hoping it showed that a man will go as far as he has to to reach that finish line.
thanks again for reading.

Fantastic issue. The surreal nature of what was going on (Bruce's identity revealed, death of Nightwing, etc.) clued me in that everything wasn't as it seemed, but it was written so expertly that it was impossible not to get swept up in the story.
There were touches I really enjoyed, such as Alfred sternly addressing Bruce, and a delirious Bruce wanting to say more to Gordon. This is as good a probe into Bruce's psyche as I've ever read.
The fact that this story emphasized Bruce Wayne instead of Batman made it all the more powerful and heart-wrenching. I've been really pleased with how the bat-stories in the DC2 lately seem to be really fleshing out the Bruce character.
All in all, a stellar effort from a stellar writer.

Thank you so much. I did want this story to be about the man behind the mask, and I'm glad that came through. Grant and I have some interesting stuff planned for year three. Hope you enjoy it!
