At last, more Detective Comics! Outside of New Outsiders, this is one of the books that I can always slide into, I don't know what it's about those two books, but golly gosh, they're always great reads!
And indeed, this was no exception to that norm! Loved the murder mystery angle, loved the fact that Gordon is taking the loss of his wife and child so badly, a very distinct change from the detached-ness of Batman himself.
Also: Alfred-- No!

The mystery of Jack Drake continues, the criminal conspiracies and gang feud spilling into outright war jacks up the stakes, and some personal time for Jim make this a solid continuation of the overall arc. And it was good, but there were some elements that made me unable to give it a fourth star.
Many of the characters sound alike. Jack Drake, tough guy thug (as he seems at the moment) with his line including "privy" jarred me for some reason, probably because it was the capper to an entry where...well like I said, everyone kind of sounded alike. Made it tough for individual characterization to show through. The scene with Batman and Jim seemed stiff to me, probably as a result. There was some emotion in there, but for me at least, it didn't come across as sharp as it could have.
And a couple of grammar issues and one "layout" issue helped to hurt this. A couple of times in the story, the possessive got turned into a plural (nobody's turned into nobodies, and city's turned into cities), that was the most jarring and blatant of the grammar issues. Normally I try to gloss over small errors, since I make them, we all make them, and we're not getting paid (neither writer nor editor), so I only really ever point out the ones that make me stop, or jolt me from the story.
And while I'm not a fan of the posting layout of DC2 (giving each scene its own post in the thread, for some reason it often makes me work to avoid being jarred out of the story...not sure why that is, but it does, and someday I'll pin down why), I can accept that that's hw it's done. That's fine. But then, we gotta make sure it's done right, and right now, the scene with Alfred and Jack doesn't end where it should, but includes the first paragraph (or two, forget off hand for sure) of Batman and Freeze at the park. An easy fix, I'm sure.
Solid effort. Interesting conclusion, though I"m not sure how I feel about the cliffhanger. I'll decide ont that when I see how it's resolved in the next issue. Which I'll be back for because it was a solid effort, and a good story.
Take care Don

Well, I suspect that it's done that way due to the character limit currently imposed on posts by ProBoards. In the future there's a Proboards upgrade in the offing that should hopefully mean that a full issue can be posted in one go. However, in the meantime, I'd suggest clicking on the key at the top of the thread that shows the issue in a more readable black and white, where the scene transition might not seem as jarring.

I will indeed try that and see how it goes. Thanks.

As always, Charlie, you are way to kind, but I always appreciate it. Glad your liking the murder mystery, I hope the payoff is worth it for you. Yes, Gordon is having a rough time, and that is going to play out not only here, but also in the celebration/Christmas issue of New Outsiders #25, coming the 4th week of December. Trust me, you won't want to miss it. Alfred -- Yes! I mean come on, aren't we all sick of him by now, anyway. ;D

Glad there was enough here to keep you interested and sorry about the mistakes that kept it from four stars, however, I'm just happy that people read my stuff. Give it a one star and tell me I suck, that's cool! At least you took the time to read it! I'm going to have to watch that, keeping everyone's voice different is a touch thing to do and what I work at the most. As for that one little word... privy. Yeah, interesting choice, wasn't it? Does it mean something? Is it a clue that you noticed? Or was the writer half zonked when he was writing that part? Probably the latter... Sorry the Batman/Gordon scene didn't work for you. I always make an effort to make everyone both honest and unique. I'm not sure how I felt about the cliffhanger either, but I'm glad you'll be coming back!

Okay....I am totally freaked out by this and have no idea how Bruce is going to survive!!!! YOU?!?!?! I'd like to know how he's going to survive as well! Honest, if anyone has any idea's, send them my way. Oh geez, what have I done?!?!?! You're right, of course. there is more there than meets the eye. I might as well tell you... Alfred's real name is Alice. A femal cross-dresser who has had everybody fooled for many years now. But please keep that between us. Seriously, though, Jay, thank you for reading and responding, as always. It means a lot.

I agree with Don about the editing mistakes, it seems like there were an awful lot this issue. The story was still good, however, I just had to keep making little corrections in my head. Jack does seem like a stereotypical thug in this issue, which makes me wonder how he got by unnoticed all these years. The Gordon stuff is true-to-life, but still a bummer to read. And I really wonder how you're gonna fix up Bats next issue...please don't say it was a Batman clone.

Believe me, all will be answered before 2009. Gordon's story is sad, and true to life and will not only continue in this book, but in issue #25 of New Outsiders (You DON"T want to miss that!) A Batman clone?! What? I read Marvel, I don't write Marvel. Thanks Susan for reading and letting me know your thoughts. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you.
