Big fan of this issue, and this whole direction of Batman. Charlie and co. are building something here, something big and something REALLY cool.
I love the imagry evoked by the descriptions of the city as a whole, and each scene. The tone changes and shifts throughout, from Dick descending on the criminals, to Bullock at the crime scene, to training with Tim, and the final twist with Waller. Each scene is it's own, and captures the moment perfectly. Bravo.
I'd be lying if I didn't say that the Freeze back up was my favorite part of the issue. His character has always been such a tragic one, and it is amazingly captured here. The pain of the whole situation is beautifully conveyed, some of the best writing I've ever seen.
5*s!

I gotta say, the last page there with Waller really gave me chills.
...not going to be pretty, is it?

Big fan of this issue, and this whole direction of Batman. Charlie and co. are building something here, something big and something REALLY cool. Yes, I think we are. Grant and Brian started laying the foundation, Ellen is doing wonderful things with Dick, and I'm pushing forward, just hoping to do them proud. I hope I can make Brian proud, he's been doing some amazing stuff with Detective Comics since #11. Bravo. Gotham City has to be a character unto itself, so I'm glad you liked what I'm doing. The City is still recovering from the destruction wreaked upon it by the Joker and Ra's, and we'll be seeing a lot of that in this first arc. I'd be lying if I didn't say that the Freeze back up was my favorite part of the issue. His character has always been such a tragic one, and it is amazingly captured here. The pain of the whole situation is beautifully conveyed, some of the best writing I've ever seen. 5*s! I have to thank Sam there for really helping making that back-up shine. We're going to have back-ups complimenting the main story over the next few months, reflecting events in the main story or adding to them or future issues. We've got a guest writer in #34, I can't wait to get it out there. I've always loved Mr Freeze, and based his characterisation on DCAU, just like everyone should do. Heh, we'll be seeing more of Victor in the coming months.

Big thank you to Samantha for being a fantastic editor, to Craig for an awesome cover, and Ramon for the new logo. We've got a lot planned for 2009, and I aim to deliver as best I can

Hey, all I did was add some stage direction to Nora *blush* I'm not taking anything more than a "with help from" credit.
I enjoyed this issue, if I did think it was a little long (and boy am I not one to talk there.) I thought you did a good job of showing us where you were going to be putting the focus, and fitting a lot of different ideas and interactions into your first take on the title. I also thought the back-up was great, though I kind of still think it could have been incorporated in the story itself. A lot of fun, and i'm happy to be a part of it.

Incredibly intense issue! Just as I figured, you raised the stakes and brought this book to a whole new level in just one issue. Although I really loved all of it, the opening scene between Dick and Kal was probably my favorite, but then I'm a sucker for those character moments. And this villain, if it's who I think it is, cool! But darn! You got to him before I did. This cover was amazing, to say the least. Probably one of my favorite Batman covers on this site, and there have been so many awesome covers, that says a lot! 5 well deserved stars for the kick off of a whole new creative team!

Dick and Kal? Don't you mean Batman #31?

apologies, Charlie. I ment Dick and Tim. Although I did like the Dick and Kal scene in Batman as well. But I'm loving the growing feeling of brotherhood you're doing with Dick and Tim. Sorry.

Well, I wasn't expecting this sort of atmospheric "prelude" before the Squad fight, but it was of course wonderful, dramatic and intense.
Full marks for Dick living up to the legacy, and of course the Freeze back up.
Is our "Death" inspired by Roscarch to some degree?

Not that I'm aware of, dude. In fact, that's the first I've heard it brought up. What are you thinking?

Oh, no, "Death" hasn't appeared yet... Craig and I are working on something that should make everything a bit more clearer....

Incredibly intense issue! Just as I figured, you raised the stakes and brought this book to a whole new level in just one issue. Just trying to follow your lead Brian. I'm trying to make every issue better than the last one I wrote, and I had so much inspiration spewing out after reading your run. I still can't get #19 out of my head. Although I really loved all of it, the opening scene between Dick and Kal Tim was probably my favorite, but then I'm a sucker for those character moments. Again, trying to honour what you've established before, as well as what Ellen was doing with the two of them over in Nightwing (the scene here was directly influenced and inspired by what she did with the boys in her second issue of her new run, I do believe). And this villain, if it's who I think it is, cool! But darn! You got to him before I did. Sorry This cover was amazing, to say the least. Probably one of my favorite Batman covers on this site, and there have been so many awesome covers, that says a lot! Craig? You out there? Take a bow 5 well deserved stars for the kick off of a whole new creative team! Thanks, I think I'm safe in saying that Craig and I appreciate your kinds words. There are like three things to consider when I approach this book: What I want to write, what Craig will enjoy doing for a cover, and the villains I can use. The two main villains of my run (plotted and planned till May) are going to terrify you. One more than another. I hope But I'm loving the growing feeling of brotherhood you're doing with Dick and Tim. Don't mention brotherhood or family, Brian! Dave'll be all over it like a fly on shit!

This isn't just the set up for the Batman Vs Suicide Squad match up, but also the first phase of my entire run! Everything begins here. Full marks for Dick living up to the legacy, and of course the Freeze back up. Thank Sam for that! She made that back up shine Is our "Death" inspired by Roscarch to some degree? As we've established above, no, sorry

I loved the way that Dick made a conscious effort to keep up the scare tactic of Batman's MO. Stuff that was second nature to Bruce, Dick is having to think about. It made it much more enjoyable than someone just putting on the uniform and letting it do all the work.

It made it much more enjoyable than someone just putting on the uniform and letting it do all the work. Exactly! Dick is working for the cowl, and doing a damn job about it, but it's not a second nature to him-- Not yet, you could say. Dick's going to be becoming, at least in Detective Comics, a more Bruce-minded character. He's not going to brood every night, but he's the "son" of one of the greatest tactical minds in the world (Batman wages a war on crime, isn't murdered or caught, has nightly patrols, solves numerous mysteries, and still maintains a façade in the day time? What else can you refer to him as?) and will begin to think like one too when the time is right. Thanks for reading!

A well-done start to a new run for Detective, Charlie. Congratulations, to you and your editor (and your cover artist, what a fantastic black and white Batman shot...beautiful!). You three have done good setting up a great jumping on point, using the end of the previous arc (and Batman) to prepare for new things here.
I thought the beginning was a bit pretentious and overblown, more fitting to your Vertigo-style titles, but after that bit, you settled into a nice groove, and the threads you've laid out were quite intriguing, and offering some great stories down the road.
Well done, and I look forward to Suicide Squad coming to town to face off with our Caped Crusader!
Take care Don

Pretty cool that Onomatopoeia is going to be coming in, loved that villain in Green Arrow. I like your handle on Dick Grayson as the bat too. Can't wait for the next issue. I'm excited to see what you can do with the Suicide Squad. I'm a little confused though, if Freeze took a dip in the Lazarus pit wouldn't that cure him of his affliction? I mean, it's been established it can cure all disease, and any ailment but after Freeze went in, he was not only cured of the poisoning Phosphorus inflicted on him, but somehow restored his original condition which had been cured by said poisoning... My head hurts
