Well, this is the start of something new (but not as new as we'd like to lead you to believe). Instead of the same old Detective Comics for the New Year, we thought we'd start with something entirely different, and see where that takes us. This is the same kind of format as the Detective Comics Annual #1, wherein the new Bat-teams (editorially spearheaded by the talented John "Checkmate" Elbe), Brian "New Outsiders" Burchette & Chris "Blue Beetle" Paugh and myself went all out, and set our pieces up for the next year. And it was a blast. So why not do it again? Mike Hewison is known for his stint on Rogues Gallery and for lurking around the boards. He's a talented sonofabitch, and I enjoy collaborating with him, and his vision for the title... well, during our talks, I came to realise I'd be an idiot not to snatch him up and put him to work. So here he is. This is the first issue of the new format of the new Detective Comics. I'd like to introduce my new collaborators, Joe Jarin and Mike Hewison, artist and co-writer/plotter respectively, and I'd like to think you'll enjoy where we'll going. The first half of the issue continues threads started by myself from my first issue, whilst Mike... well he does what he's good at. Joe delivers astonishingly on the covers, and hopefully will continue to do so until a better offer comes around... So I hope you enjoy what we're doing! We are. It's going to be a blast... let's just see how long we can keep this going. Story-arcs will intertwine and thread into one another but there are two voices behind this title now, and it'll be one hell of a ride. Now, tell us what you think, if you don't rightly mind!

Have to say, it's nice to be on a Bat title. It's especially nice to have a magnificent artist doing the covers, and a very talented co-writer. Charlie's plans for the title are positively brilliantly twisted for the next couple issues. It was an honour to start co-writing, and expanding the overall arc as well as, possibly add my own voice to a wide array of characters, and Gotham itself.
I had to go with Zsasz though, for not only being one of the best villains in the Bat titles; but also one of the characters I first wrote on DC2. It's great to be writing steadily for the DC2, and it's especially great to be writing 'Tec. I hope you enjoy things to come in the ensuing months!

I liked the issue and the new format. Onomatopoeia is awesome and very eery at the same time. Can't wait to see where the plotline's going with him...Click. And on the B story...I've got one thing to say...Zsasz is creepy as hell and didn't his mother ever tell him it's not healthy to cut himself? And sending the new guy after him...I'm worried.
I liked how Dick was mad that Tim had dissapeared but Alfred had already talked to Tim and knew where he was. Alfred's the man.
Good issue and I think the new format works. I'll be back next month.

Whoops. Forgot to mention the cover. All I've gotta say is there's a reason I'm keeping joey on as Aquaman artist...HIS ART ROCKS! I like how the cover shows both stories that go on in the issue. And it's eery at the same time. 5/5

It looks like another great run is heating up. Mike's back up story was bone chilling to say the least and he is bringing a very cool and harder look to Gordon. Me likey!
Onomona... well you know, for some reason is not a villain I've ever cared that much for, but here it works, and works well. Of course I would expect nothing less from Mr. HoM. Wouldn't mind seeing just a tad more of Batman, but that didn't detract from either story. Both were excellent.
And the cover was rocking! Excellent job, gentlemen!

Mike isn't writing a back-up story, he's writing a co-story! Two stories in an issue, two sides of a cover, two writers and two stories that are going to collide in two, three issues time!

Thanks for the props Starlord, co-writing 'Tec has been fun so far, and things will be picking up and you'll see things starting to come together over the next couple of issues.

I liked the issue and the new format. Onomatopoeia is awesome and very eery at the same time. Can't wait to see where the plotline's going with him...Click. Been waiting to use him since I started writing on-site, and this is the big chance I've been looking for! Ono is terrifying, and I loved "Sound of Violence" in Green Arrow all those years ago. One of my all time favourite story arcs. The current "Cacophony" mini is... a major let down, IMO. But we hope to do the character proud! And on the B story...I've got one thing to say...Zsasz is creepy as hell and didn't his mother ever tell him it's not healthy to cut himself? And sending the new guy after him...I'm worried. Zsasz is one of our favourite Bat-villains, and again, big plans. And Kitch? Oh, I'm saying nothing. I liked how Dick was mad that Tim had dissapeared but Alfred had already talked to Tim and knew where he was. Alfred's the man. Yes he is! That's our mission statement for the book. "Alfred is the man." 'Nuff said, me thinks! Good issue and I think the new format works. I'll be back next month. We're glad you think so! Detective Comics is going to be an exciting place to be over the next few months, we have a whole lot of new mythology to weave into the title, and you really won't see where we're going with it.

It looks like another great run is heating up. Mike's back up story was bone chilling to say the least and he is bringing a very cool and harder look to Gordon. Me likey! Now the Suicide Squad is out of the picture (--For now! Wait, did I just say that?! Uh oh...) we're getting to the meat of the run, and it's brilliant to have Mike onboard with me. We've got a tight vision for the book, and the two story arcs that are unwinding as we progress will soon intersect. I cannot wait. Onomona... well you know, for some reason is not a villain I've ever cared that much for, but here it works, and works well. Of course I would expect nothing less from Mr. HoM. I love villains. And if things go the way they are, you'll see that in earnest in a project I have planned down the line... Wouldn't mind seeing just a tad more of Batman, but that didn't detract from either story. Both were excellent. Detective Comics has always been a title more concerned with mystery and the GCPD themselves, so we're staying true to that vision, but next month? Batman vs Onomatopoeia. And it will not be pretty. No Blue Beetle, no Batwoman, no back up, just Dick Grayson using all his tricks to take this evil sonofabitch down. Also, the final fate of Armand Krol! Don't miss it! And the cover was rocking! Excellent job, gentlemen! Thanks again!

Maybe it's for the best that Tim is out of town, things being the way they are right now.... Omotopoeia scares me more than Zsasz.
So far.

I hate to be the one to say it, but this issue of Detective was a major letdown for me. After the high of the opening arc, this was just flat to me. I'm not a fan of the way the first issue was laid out and paced, it seemed very confusing and choppy to me, and Ono (as I'm going to call him now, great derivative) didn't really grab me. With a prose use of him, making him really come together is going to be a huge challenge. I'm not a fan of Zsasz at all, honestly, and the initial death toll for him in this story means that he's already starting at a high-stakes plateau and can only go up to ratchet the tension and that's going to make it tough to keep buying into the story. Focusing on Zsasz also left me cold, and I'm a batman nut, so I prefer to see him in his titles. The rather lackluster response to Tim's running away from home also bugged me. I couldn't buy into Alfred's response, maybe Dick had said Alfred's lines and vice versa, but as it was...eh. Anyway, sorry to come down on this issue. I'll be back next issue to see how things go from here. Good luck. Great cover by Joey though! Good work, glad to see a regular artist stepping up for the series Take care Don

I appreciate the feedback lissilambe. I wanted to include Bats in the second story, but these stories timelines are running concurrent with one another, and it would have been difficult in having him in both situations at once from a writing standpoint. It kind of worked out in a way that we could instead focus on the Detectives of the Major Crimes Unit, for "Homecoming" and I hope next issue will be better for ya.

Hey, 'Tec fans! I want to apologize for the lack of new issues on this title, and a lack of resolution to the arcs running side by side inside. Mike and I will resolve our scheduling difficulties very soon, and tie up these events in a special Detective Comics Annual, which will not only conclude our storylines, but launch into Mike's solo run as writer on the title as I take over on the main Batman title. We're continuing to co-write arcs as the books progress, but right now we can't focus on Detective Comics as we intended. Sorry for those of you waiting, and an especially big sorry to Joe Jarin for his covers not being showcased properly-- but we intend to get the stories out there as soon as we can!
