Best issue yet. We're just beyond the halfway point, and it really hits the fan in this one. The good guys are losing. No--- it looks like they've lost! Two major casualties here (well, inasmuch as we all know better ), the Big Bad bustin' through from beneath reality (though I still have no idea what this means, but I guess that's sort of the point...?) and Our Heroes at their nadir! The sense of menace and utter hopelessness is almost overpowering. This single issue could be the most powerful and effective thing Charlie's ever written. My favorite scene: Hawkman punching the angel in the face--- twice! The whole battle of (and retreat from!) Metropolis was epic and apocalyptic. I especially liked the image of Hawkman and Zauriel dueling in the skies, disappearing higher and higher into the maelstrom above. One quibble: okay, I can see the Flash dying is kinda obligatory (hey, it is a Crisis in all-but-name, after all), but I don't understand why the league didn't work harder to save Superman? He's their biggest asset--- couldn't Barry have super-sped him to the saftey of the Fortress (" ...prepared beforehand to protect him from the Dark Sunlight")? Or J'onn? Or Diana? Otherwise, I was enthralled from beginning to end. This wasn't fun, per se--- but it was Must-Read DC2, and the story grabs you by the throat and compells you. The reveal of the Big Bad was very effective, reminiscent of His first appearance (way back when--- I remember buying the issue off the spinner rack ;D) and just as creepy. I wonder if anyone (not privvy to inside info) saw this coming? That cover by Ramon was awesome. I love the murky, minimalist color palatte he's using for these covers--- it really adds to the overall sense of despair and doom that is the hallmark of this event. I have no idea how Charlie is going to follow-up on the events of this issue! But I will be back next month to find out! Fives stars, gentlemen!

Wow, man. Terra and Raven went over like dominoes.
Serious, nightmarish stuff here, which is of course what you wanted.
And I had somehow missed the fact that Hawkman's story about that alien entity in the knife was going to factor in. I honestly thought he had beaten it.

Very cool to hear, as Kevin can attest to, I was very worried about this issue. It was originally #4 and #5, but I thought... if we're going on a month's hiatus for some Special one-shot fun, might as well leave you with something big, and so two cliffhanger's became two, then a third, then I just kept piling them on. So yeah, worried... We're just beyond the halfway point, and it really hits the fan in this one. The good guys are losing. No--- it looks like they've lost! Two major casualties here (well, inasmuch as we all know better ), Yeah, I know, but it's not like I could have asked Pat to put Action Comics on hiatus, is it? IS IT?! Yeah, things are a bit bleak. I love it. the Big Bad bustin' through from beneath reality (though I still have no idea what this means, but I guess that's sort of the point...?) and Our Heroes at their nadir! All... will... be... revealed, and it's all tied to Zauriel--! The sense of menace and utter hopelessness is almost overpowering. This single issue could be the most powerful and effective thing Charlie's ever written. 2009 has been a good year for me so far-- my recent stuff has been really well received, and it's all thanks to my editors... and the amazing community that makes up this site. I've had a new sense of enjoyment on a lot of levels, and all the stuff I'm working on now, I hope, reflects that. Batman is a blast, and I'm collaborating with some awesome writers on the next stage of those titles, Secret Society of Super-Villains is taking great shape, and I think it's general knowledge enough now to say that Justice League is a joy to plot and write, thanks to my co-writer Kevin Feeney-- and talking of Feeney, and collaborators (tenuous link!), DC2 Nemesis couldn't be here, as good as it is, without the help of Kevin and Don Walsh, and I'm grateful for their help... even if you can't get them in the same room together ;D My favorite scene: Hawkman punching the angel in the face--- twice! The whole battle of (and retreat from!) Metropolis was epic and apocalyptic. I especially liked the image of Hawkman and Zauriel dueling in the skies, disappearing higher and higher into the maelstrom above. Yeah, that scene underwent so many rewrites, and I'm pleased with how it turned out. Especially cool, because I'm so far ahead, currently writing the finale (on and off, I have plenty of time-- he said, jinxing himself), that I'm able to tie stuff from #6 and #7 into the earlier stuff. Too fun. Or J'onn? Or Diana? I knew someone would call me on this, and that was why simply touching Superman caused a chain reaction-- the feedback from his aura, shifting under the Sun, caused tremendous feedback in Green Lantern's ring, and Diana just stroking her fingers against his shoulder-- sparks! So you have to kind of swallow your verisimilitude and go with it, but I acknowledge that, completely. There is a reason we've established that the Fortress so well protected though... see you next issue... This was a major part of Don's contribution, suggested last year, back when we were discussing it on the boards, but not posted publicly, and it was amazing. Everything came into place with that one name. Gone were the obvious ideas of Anti-Monitor, Satan even, but this terrifying concept from TotGLC that just... makes you shiver. It's going to be a good one, and this is not your father's Nekron. No sir-ee. That cover by Ramon was awesome. I love the murky, minimalist color palatte he's using for these covers--- it really adds to the overall sense of despair and doom that is the hallmark of this event. Ramon keeps blowing me away, cover after cover, and I'm so glad he agreed to patronise me one last time on covers. Though hopefully, with Doctor Occult coming out sometime next month (and not tying into this event! Ha!), he'll maybe finish that cover too! I can't wait to see I have no idea how Charlie is going to follow-up on the events of this issue! But I will be back next month to find out! Fives stars, gentlemen! Things go quiet. And things get deadly. With all the villains being corrupted when Nekron was within the Black Sun-- what happens to those of our heroes with questionable pasts-- murderous pasts even-- with him all the way out? You'll all see.

Wow, man. Terra and Raven went over like dominoes. Oh, wait until they pick themselves up-- Terra has her big moment in #7, and Raven is in #5 onwards, along with "the Shadowpact" and... Firestorm? Serious, nightmarish stuff here, which is of course what you wanted. Indeed! And I had somehow missed the fact that Hawkman's story about that alien entity in the knife was going to factor in. I honestly thought he had beaten it. I'm going to "repost" (read: move) that Hawkman story next month, because it plays a really cool, integral part in the story, establishing a load of story foundations that permeated throughout the rest of the work after it. Thanks for your time, Jay!

Wrote the pull list review but forgot to comment . Another awesome issue, Charlie. This event's been really cool and I love just the whole mood of it in general and the characters you chose to focus on; Jason and Zauriel have been a huge highlight for me as characters. And this issue ramped up the stakes incredibly. And now that the black sun has fully risen...pardon my french, shit's gonna get down.
