The Matrix is an entity billions-of-years old that has traveled the entire span of the universe. While riding on cosmic rays, this formless mass of energy searches for a suitable host. Every host of the Matrix has the potential ability to expand on the powers that are innate to the Matrix, but only a few have been able to fully understand its inner workings. Hosts of the Matrix also have the ability to draw upon the experiences of all previous hosts. The Matrix records the life of its host from the time of their merger to the moment of death. When a host dies the Matrix moves on, looking for the next person with the genetic capacity to take on the mantle. While traveling by the Planet Earth, the Matrix was drawn towards its surface… towards New York City… *

Martin Stein, unaware of the cosmic entity that was about to descend upon him and alter his life forever, sat at his desk exhausted, after talking to reporters all day. The planning and development of the Hudson Nuclear Power Plant had taken the better part of a decade. Charges of stealing and plagiarism threatened to ruin his large-scale project and take away his dream, a dream that had brought him a Nobel Prize along the way. Stein had conceived his vision of a fully automated nuclear power plant during his last days as an undergraduate at Stanford University where he attained a Bachelors degree in Physics graduating summa cum laude. He tweaked his vision and continued to work on it during graduate school obtaining his masters then doctorate. After finishing school, he got a job in the Research and Development department at STAR Labs in New York, where he presented his design to his superiors, but the budget of the department at the time was tight and could not support his highly innovative and controversial project. Stein grew frustrated with his superiors at STAR and left after five years of service to become a Professor of Physics at Hudson University, where he quickly rose to the rank of Department Chairman. At Hudson U, Stein met another Physics professor named Danton Black and the two formed a partnership, furiously working on the Power Plant project in between teaching classes and grading papers. Stein was subsequently hired to head Research and Development at the Hudson Power Company. His first duty was to hire Danton Black and the two of them submitted the proposal for their Power Plant which was met with a welcoming attitude and a big wallet. The construction of the Hudson Nuclear Power Plant met with numerous delays, most of them coming from local protesters picketing the site and obtaining injunctions in the courtroom. The project was almost scrapped due to escalating legal costs until Stein was nominated and then won the Nobel Prize for his groundbreaking work. With the publicity of having the Nobel Prize winner working for them, Hudson renewed their commitment to Stein’s project and soon all of the external obstacles were finally solved. Stein’s project was dealt with a big blow when it was discovered that Danton Black had been stealing plans and equipment from the project and selling them to a competitor. Stein had no choice but to fire his one time friend, but did not report this stealing to the authorities. Danton, wanting to get back at Stein, approached the Nuclear Regulations Council, claiming that Martin Stein had stolen his ideas and implemented them in his power plant design without his consent. On the day the power plant was going to activate the reactor, the N.R.C. had begun a formal investigation into Danton’s claims and halted the activation of the reactor until the investigation was concluded. These claims, if proven to be true, could cost Martin his entire career and his Nobel Prize. After a night of drowning his discontent in a bottle of Jack Daniels, Martin Stein came back to the plant and began to conduct interviews, hoping to get his side of the story out and preserve whatever he could of his reputation. Martin was waiting in his office waiting to do his last interview of the day, with a student from Hudson University as a favor to a former colleague who owed a favor to a friend of his. He took his black horn-rimmed glasses off and placed his head into his hands. He knew these charges were a sham, but they were an unneeded headache. He picked his head up as he heard some unexpected commotion coming from down the hall. He got up from his desk and walked down the hall to investigate. He reached the source, the reactor room and saw two young men wearing ski masks placing explosives along the far wall. “What are you doing?” He screamed instinctively, knowing if he was in better control, we probably would have remained silent and alerted the authorities. “Damn it Eddie, do something.” One of the masked men said. Stein was oblivious to the third man to his left, holding a pistol in his hand who hit him in the temple once with its handle. Martin Stein fell to the floor, unconscious. *

I can’t believe this. Ronnie Raymond thought as he knelt down on the sidewalk outside the Hudson Nuclear Power Plant, sifting through the papers he brought with in a folder. He was looking for the notes and research he did last night for his interview with Martin Stein. Ronnie Raymond was a freshman journalism major attending Hudson University on a basketball scholarship. It was hard for him to adjust to college. At Bradley High School, he was a star Point Guard, setting the state record for assists and three point percentage. At Hudson, he found it hard to crack the game rotation, especially since two potential NBA players were playing the two guard spots. His playing time was usually regulated to garbage time at the end of blowouts and the fame he enjoyed in high school was almost nonexistent. Knowing that his future perhaps would not include the letters N.B.A. in it, he decided to focus on journalism, following in the footsteps of his father. He got a job with the school newspaper, publishing a running diary on the basketball season, but he wanted to get some serious work. He had his father pull some strings to get this interview with the former Hudson Professor and Nobel Prize winner who was on the cusp of his biggest breakthrough and under some immense pressure due to the accusations of plagiarism from a former collaborator. This was something that could make a name for Ronnie. And he forgot his research and notes. Screw it; I’m going to have to do this on the fly. Ronnie thought as he picked himself up and proceeded to the entrance of the power plant, trying to remember the various information and questions he had come up with in the preceding days. He walked into the main entrance and began to search for the room he was supposed to meet the Professor in. He found what he was looking for and entered the employee break room. After placing a dollar bill in a vending machine and pressing the proper buttons to get himself a Coke, Ronnie sat down and began to wait for the Professor. After about 15 minutes, he lost his patience; finished his drink and left to go look for him. He walked around the facility and was in awe of it, though he didn’t have much knowledge of the equipment or what it did. I’m such an idiot. He thought, unable to forgive himself for coming unprepared. Ronnie turned the corner into another hallway when he was startled by the sound of the emergency alarm. He looked straight ahead and saw a man in a ski mask holding the emergency door open with a pistol in his hand. “Come on, hurry up.” he screamed. He looked down the hall and spotted Ronnie. “Damn it; let’s get out of here now, someone’s here.” Two other men, also wearing ski masks ran out of the door, one of them carrying a blue duffel bag. Ronnie ran into the room the three men had left, not wanting to engage people with guns in a physical confrontation. He entered the room and saw Professor Martin Stein lying unconscious on the floor, bleeding from his graying temples and his horn-rimmed glasses smashed on the floor. He also saw attached on the far wall a large amount of explosives with timer attached that was less than a minute away from expiring. Ronnie recognized this room from his research and saw the large nuclear reactor in the center. “Oh crap.” Ronnie thought. He had no time to attempt to disable it (not that he could anyway and briefly wondered why the thought entered his mind). He bent his 6’1’’ frame down and picked up the unconscious Professor and began to make his way toward the emergency exit the masked been had used earlier. Sweat beaded around his forehead and tears welled up in his eyes as he dragged the unconscious man. He heard the sound of the timer expiring, and the resulting explosion would result in the setting off of the nuclear reactor. Dad…Doreen… Ronnie thought, feeling the oncoming heat. I love you…*

The Matrix descended on the Hudson Nuclear Power Plant. The steel and concrete that made up the building’s infrastructure proved not to be effective in hindering its progress. As it began its intention of permeating its would-be host, an influx of nuclear energy began to mix and mutate the cosmic energy. It swirled around its potential host and began to mutate again due to the prescience of a second party. The energy began to be absorbed by both bodies, with different elements of the Matrix being divided between the two as it began the process of merging the two men into one. *

Danton Black stepped on the premises of the Hudson Nuclear Power Plant, arriving about half an hour after Ronnie and was unaware that the college student was in the facility. He intended to plant evidence on the site that would help support his claims that he made to the Nuclear Regulations Council. He walked down the hallway toward the Reactor Room when he heard an explosion. With his curiosity getting the better of him, he ran down the hall to see what was going on. He looked in the room and saw a bright and colorful mixture of cosmic and nuclear energy swirling around the room. The energy began to expand, almost leaving the room before it began to contract into a bright yellow humanoid creature. Danton had to shade his eyes from it as it felt like he was looking into the sun. The humanoid began to tremble, each tremble shaking the body with more violence than the last. A sudden burst of energy escaped from the core of the being and bathed Danton Black with a mixture of nuclear and cosmic energy. The force threw Danton into a wall and he fell to the ground, slowly losing consciousness. Before he went under, he saw the humanoid figure began to develop a face, fingers and other human features, while still shining a bright yellow like the sun. A fire ignited at the top of its head, where a person’s hair might have been as the creature looked over itself and let out a loud primal screamed as it looked to the heavens. Danton looked away with the last remaining strength in his body and saw his mirror image looking back at him. There’s no mirror in this hall. He thought to himself as his world faded to black. *
