Doctor Fate (Earth-One)
Secret Identity: Kent Nelson
Alias: Agent of the Lords of Order
Status: Superhero, MIA
Occupation: Archaeologist turned occultist
Known Relatives: Inza Nelson, wife (also MIA)
Group Affiliation: The Justice Society of America (former member)
Base of Operations: Salem, MA
Height: 6' 2’’
Weight: 190 lbs
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Blond
Powers & Abilities: Doctor Fate possesses three artifacts, any of which on their own would be a puissant mystical weapon, but used together give him access to the most arcane secrets of the Ninth Age of Magic: the Helm of Nabu, the Amulet of Anubis and the Cloak of Nergal. Sometimes Nelson will wear a modified half-helm called the Helmet of Fate
History: In 1938, archaeologist Sven Nelson excavated the Valley of Ur, uncovering the Tomb of Nabu, a long-dead Egyptian wizard. Sven was killed by poison gas from the tomb, leaving his young son Kent alone. Trapped in the tomb for days, the child donned the Helm of Nabu, which roused the ghost of the wizard, who, taking pity on the boy, trained him in the mystic arts.
Many years passed in the tomb, though it was only weeks in the outside world. In that time, Kent Nelson grew to be an adept, determined to use his powers to fight the menaces that constantly and secretly attacked mankind. But Nabu’s ancient foe, Nergal, sensed that there was a new bearer of the Helm, and attacked the young sorcerer. With the aid of the occultist and medium Inza Kramer, Nelson defeated Nergal, took the Cloak of the Chaos Beast, and earned the right to call himself Doctor Fate, champion and agent of the mystical Lords of Order.
Dr. Fate served with the Justice Society of America and the war-time All-Star Squadron, but when the JSA disbanded in 1951, he and Inza retired to Fate’s Tower in Salem, a magical locus of displaced reality, existing on many planes at once. They aged very slowly, devoting themselves to academic and occultic pursuits. As the years went by, they became aware of subtle signs pointing towards a coming calamity of cosmic proportions. Before the meaning of this became clear, Fate’s Tower was assailed by unknown forces, leaving it in smoking ruin, and Kent and Inza vanished.
The Future: Fearing an unknown but obvious menace, the ghost of Jim Corrigan has taken up the Helm of Nabu, the Amulet of Anubis and the Cloak of Nergal and has embarked on a mission to find Doctor Fate and the Spectre, once again fighting alongside the Justice Society of America.
First appearance: THE IMMORTAL LEGEND OF THE HAWKMAN #2.
