SANDMAN
Secret File
Secret Identity: Wesley Bernard Dodds
First DC2 Appearance: JSA: Legends of the Golden Age #0
Status: Hero
Base of Operations: JSA Museum, Manhattan
Occupation: Businessman, retired
HT: 5’11’’
WT: 170 lbs
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Brown
Powers and Abilities: Wes Dodds has no superpowers, but is subject to prescient dreams. Having studied in the East for many years, he is a master of Tantric Arts and a proficient martial artist. He carries a gas gun that emits an anesthetic and also a gaseous form of a truth-serum, and he also carries a wirepoon gun designed by Michael Holt.
History: Returning from his studies in the East after the death of his father in 1937, Wesley Dodds’ nightmares of the increasingly darkening world led him to don a gas mask and fedora and to fight crime as the Sandman, one of the first mystery-men of the Golden Age. In 1938, he teamed with Hawkman, the Flash, Hourman, Dr. Fate, Wonder Woman, the Atom, and Starman to foil the machinations of the Ultra-Humanite and to form the Justice Society of America.
Wesley’s career as Sandman ended in 1951, after the House Committee on Un-America Activities demanded that the JSA unmask, and he settled down for a long retirement with his constant companion Dian Belmont. Both he and Dian had been exposed to the effects of Per Degaton’s chronobomb, which had the unintended consequence of slowing the aging process. Nevertheless, Wes did not don the familiar mask and fedora for many years. He and Dian traveled the world, sharing more mundane adventures than any he ever faced as the Sandman. In his absence, Dian’s nephew Sanderson Hawkins looked after their business--- and even donned the fedora for a time himself, until a near-death experience forced him out of adventuring.
Some years ago, Dian died of cancer, and Wes was inconsolable. He wandered the world without purpose until a dream of the Spear of Destiny came to him, and he spent many years searching the world for it. He found it at last in a cave in Nanda Parbat, and embarked upon the adventure that led to a reunion of the Justice Society. When the team reformed, he was again among its founding members.
He is currently on assignment in Europe investigating the threat of the sinister Neo-Nazi Fourth Reich and their mysterious new Fuhrer...
