Wow... A powerful debut from a new (and promising!) new writer of the DC2. Absolutely loved this issue. It's not just a good story, but a great morality piece, as well. I'm not much of a Batman/Gotham fan, but this issue shows us (and doesn't just tell us) how messed up the city truly is and what it does to its people. And, of course, the Joker is as scary a mamma-jamma as they come! I like the little insights to his character that are usually glossed over, like the bits of dried blood on his suit. And when he draws the lipstick smile across the duct tape... Chilling, macabre stuff.
I was pulling for our unnammed cabbie narrator. I really was. Funny how things work out, though.
SPOILERS BELOW!
I kinda wanted him to make it out alive, and face the corruption that the Joker (and Gotham) brought out in him. I could almost see him becomming a henchman for the Joker, or something like that. Wishful thinking, though. I know the story needed an ending ;D.
And Joey's cover really captured the spirit of the issue, as someboady mentioned it would. A fitting bow to a beautiful-wrapped gift!
Five stars, all around! This issue is a great example of what Rogues Gallery should be!

I really enjoyed the texture that was given to everything in this story, from all the details about the Joker, to the city itself. It's really fantastic. Plus putting Payton Riley in there was a great idea, it's easy to get lost in all the costumes but at its core Gotham is a city run by criminals not supervillains, so I love that aspect. I think my favorite part was that The Joker, well, he's just a bastard.

Really strong issue. I love the descent into crazy, I love how the Joker is written spot-on, I love the cabbie's inner monologue (Do we ever find out his name? Was it left out intentionally?), I love the cover just because it's spot-on creepy and looks great, and I love the story idea of an average citizen being swept up in Gotham's superhero game. Kinda makes me want to write something similar. Hurm...
Again, great stuff, awesome cover hope to see more of it soon.

Man, you guys sure know how to make a fella feel welcome!
I have a couple more issue ideas for Rogue's Gallery, then I may make a bid for something more traditionally ongoing.
I had a blast writing this though, and I'm happy it's been so well received!

Alright, it doesn't seem to be what you meant on a second reading, but "Didn't you have a car?" made me wonder whether this Joker ever had a Joker-Mobile. I love the concept of this story. It's something that Astro City might have done, a focus on what it's like to live in this world without being one of the movers and shakers. (And that's really high praise from me, Astro City is what I think all superhero stories ought to be) There's a lot of great Joker in here, which is hard to pull off with the right balance. At first, I wanted to say that it ended a little too.....not dark, but poignant? But I realized that wasn't a criticism, it was just the well-done whiplash of the Joker's attitude against the reality of what he's doing. Really strong start. Good to have you here

An amazing first outing. Love your characterization of the Joker. In my opinion there is no one right way to do the Joker, but out of all the fan fiction I've read this is up there as one of the best versions. Also poor, poor, deranged unnamed cabbie, I would've liked to see him become a recurring character in DC2's Gotham Universe. Either way, good job!

Can't wait!

Well this is horrible in the most glorious way possible. I love the idea of Gotham City being completely wrong, broken already without the supervillains and maniacs running around, and this story captured that perfectly. The taxi-driver was someone you could really relate to, a sad sack little guy, and The Joker was just... horrible. And I like my Joker to be horrible, I like him to be nasty... and this... well. Wow. Very cool story.

Thanks! The "wrongness" of Gotham City is something I'm going to continue to explore through out Rogue's Gallery, and I'm hoping that you're all going to enjoy the subsequent issues just as much.
Thanks for all the kind words!

(Plus I have a little bit of organizing to do before I think it's pitch worthy haha)

You'll be joining a very talented collection of DC2 Bat-writers when you take on the book, Don, Brian, Dave, Imari... exciting times!

It took me a few days to finally get to this, but damn was it worth it. It is no secret that I don't like the Joker character, simply because he is overused, and his "crazy" never really adds anything of value to whatever story he is in.
This on the other hand is an amazing character tale that is everything a great read should be. Dark disturbing insight, gripping inner monologue, all stiched together with suspense and dashes of action thrown in through out.
Please, please, please take this dark, cursed vision of Gotham and run with it.
It would be a crime not to mention Joeys incredible cover that makes the whole thing...perfect.
Easily 5 stars.
