But I've just become an editor at SP! Magazine. It's a publication devoted to self-published, indie and small press comics. Which would seem to mean that although I'm not exactly working in comic books, I have entered the comics industry.Whoa.

That one doesn't... but it led to something that did. Update: I'm actually in comics now. Indie comics. For real. As an editor. Let me preface this by saying that I'm not usually on Twitter. I pop in every so often, but a couple of months can go by. Well, last month was one of my sporadic ventures onto the site, and I happened to catch a retweet from Gail Simone about a Kickstarter project. I'm looking at it and suddenly it hits me: I know the person! She and I have contributed fanfic to similar lists. And then I realize something: I'm working on a publication that spotlights indie comics—and she's writing one. I get the go ahead from my boss to interview her. While we're discussing particulars, I get a message from one Charlie McElvy asking if he can be part of it. I assume he's part of my friend's team, but as it happens, he's got his own project. My boss is okay with another interview, and away we go! So, afterwards, Charlie and I get to talking and I mention that I'm trying to break into editing but it's a bit hard finding paying work. He asked me for a rate on a 24-page script! I gave one I thought was reasonable. He took it. I did the job. He sent me a second script. So... bottom line? Should you see solicits for this this, you might want to pick it up. And not just because I'm editing it. Because they are darned good stories in their own right!

Impressed indeed!
Good luck, here's hoping you keep on breaking further and further into the industry.

Well, my current writing project isn't in comics. I'm now a freelance technical writer. Working for Covalent IT in Denver. Now that I've gotten over my panic about IT documentation. The first few hours were the hardest. If I had ANY artistic talent, I'd make a web comic of it:
Panel 1: In one corner nervous newly-graduated technical writer (NNGTW) shaking and trembling in a little ball. In the opposite corner a massive sleeping dragon. It it the IT Datamonster. It doesn't look particularly bloodthirsty... just very very massive.
Panel 2: NNGTW glances nervously at monster.
Panel 3: NNGTW advances stealthily, until, still-shaking, she is standing only a few feet away from the monster.
Panel 4: NNGTW dares to stretch out a finger and poke the dragon.
Panel 5: Dragon opens its eyes. NNGTW shakes.
Panel 6: Dragon stands. It really isn't scary-looking objectively speaking. Think "Muppet Monster" or "Puff the Magic Dragon".
Panel 7: Dragon: <i>Mrrrrrrrp?!</i>
Panel 8: NNGTW: <i>AAAAHHHHHHHHH!</i> (Dives back to corner).
Ok... it wasn't that bad once I got started, but I really WAS that scared of IT.
However, the gentleman I edited the comics for is publishing an expanded RPG sourcebook and wants me onboard to edit that too...
