GREEN LANTERN (VOLUME 1) # 26-29: 'LOVE LOST'
Written by House Of Mystery, covers by Nathan Kilburn (#26 & 27), Kraig Nicol (#28) and Joey Jarin (#29), edited by Don Walsh
INTRODUCTION:
The four issues that make up 'Love Lost', the final arc of the second ongoing run of Green Lantern, constitute the culmination of stories that hit the site back in the early days. This was a 'property' that had run, in one form or another, since the DC2's inception, and I was proud-- and daunted-- when I took up the reins of the book.
But first, check this out: I found out yesterday that the very first issue of Green Lantern I ever read was from 1993*. Green Lantern #41 was written by Gerard Jones and M.D. Bright and entitled 'Predators and Prey'. The reason I found out yesterday? Because all I remembered was the cover. That was it.
*Do you know how else I know it was from the 1990s? Deathstroke makes an appearance. No messing around here, folks.
I hit a site called ComicVine and looked up the Predator, and lo and behold, there was a list of every single appearance from that character, and thanks to my childhood recollection of that cover, I picked through a dozen or so titles and found just what I was looking for: The Predator, emerging menacingly, violently, from the shocked body of Carol Ferris, slashing at a grey-templed Hal Jordan, weird some weird Eclipso moon stuff going on too. What more could you ask for?
Now that's the kind of stuff that stays with you, guys. This character, who I had no clue about other than that his costume was entirely too bad-ass for words, haunted me from the day I read that issue until the time I took up writing Green Lantern on the DC2. I no longer own the issue, but now I know what issue it actually is? I know I need to own it again.
So anyway, thanks to that issue, the Predator stuck with me for years. But then Geoff Johns did something with the character which threw me. Geoff turned the character into a 'Love' entity that empowered the Star Sapphire Corps, but that never made any sense to me. The Predator was controlling. He was possessive. He was jealous. The Predator was every romance gone wrong, every boyfriend who couldn't let go, and through talks with my editor at the time (Don Walsh) we figured out just what the story behind the DC2's Predator was going to be. And I'm damn proud of how we delivered that story.
Like I said up there, 'Love Lost' is the culmination of dozens of threads from across the site at the time, and it was the launching pad for dozens more than are still being addressed in the latest issues of Green Lantern. It's a story that I'm so proud of, and one that I hope you enjoy too.
PREVIOUSLY IN GREEN LANTERN...
There have been ups and downs as of late for the Green Lantern Corps. Hank Henshaw, the astronaut-turned-test-pilot who started working at Ferris Air alongside Hal Jordan, became the latest Green Lantern of Earth.
Hal Jordan has recently started to question his role in the Corps, due to Chloe Sullivan (current director of the DEO*) recently giving birth to their daughter, Jessica. Hal wanted to be the best man he could be, the best father, so he began to pull back from his duties in the Corps.
*Department for Extraonormal Operations
As a result, Hank Henshaw died, and a guilt-ridden Hal Jordan doubled down on his duties as Green Lantern.
In the aftermath of Hank Henshaw's death, former Marine and current professional architect John Stewart was chosen to join the Corps, and Guy Gardner has taken the novice under his wing...
Now, we rejoin our heroes in the quiet before the storm that is... 'LOVE LOST'!
