When the DC2 launched, Batman, Detective Comics and Nightwing were three of the opening titles that helped lead the way for what came next. For 'Tec and Nightwing, the premise was simple-- seven years into Batman's career, a horrific event known as the "Knightfall" took place, wherein the Joker went on a rampage that resulted in the scattering of the extended Bat family and the death of Bruce Wayne's longterm girlfriend, Julie Madison. Those books looked at the aftermath of that horrific moment in time. Batman was set six years earlier, when Bruce was still early into his career...
