Hi guys. I'm Alex Santos and I'm a Grade 5 teacher here in the Philippines. I would just like to show some of my sample works...maybe next time I'll also post a sample short story or something. Um...how do I post images by the way? Hey, cool. I'm half Filipino. I was born in Manilla, and lived in various places in the PI until we moved to the US when I was really young. As far as posting images, I think KillerSeaMonkey said it best; First you need to upload your picture to a website. If you don't have your own webspace then Photobucket and Imageshack are great free sites for storing image files. Once you have your image uploaded then copy the url of its location, which will be Http://..whatever../your_file_name.jpg (or .gif or .bmp , etc.). Again, Photobucket provides all this info directly under each file and makes it super easy. Then, come back here and hit the image button on the little toolbar editor you get everytime you post (it's the one with the little picture frame). It will give you two sets of brackets that each say IMG. Paste the location of your pic between the two bracket sets and then post your reply. You should then be able to see your image.
Here's an example {img}http://www.placewhereyourphotois.com/yourusername/nameoffile.jpg{/img}
The brackets will be different but I had to change them so the html tag would show up for the example.

Nice to meet a fellow Filipino here in the board. If you plan to visit the Philippines, just send me an e-mail so we can talk shop (and other things). By the way, can you speak Filipino? Thanks for the advise...I really appreciate it. YES! I finally managed to post an image! Thanks again. I wouldn't have been able to post this without your help.

Thanks for the advise...I really appreciate it. YES! I finally managed to post an image! Thanks again. I wouldn't have been able to post this without your help. Next time I'll be in the PI will probably be after my parents retire, which will be in a few years. But, who knows. I can understand a tiny amount of tagalog, but unfortunately, my mother never formally trained me to speak it. On to your artwork; Nightwing - the face is great. Good use of light and shadow. However, the same lighting is not carried over to the rest of the body. The highlights seem to be haphazardly thrown in. I'm not the best lighting artist out there, but you can come closer than this. Study photos or position action figures to see how different light plays off of them. Granted, a shiny leg on a plastic toy isn't going to give you an acurate bit of lighting on a blue-jean covered calf, but you'll get the basic idea. Your pose is fine, if a little stiff, but you need to brush up on your anatomy a bit more. Get anatomy books, attend figure-drawing sessions, or once again, get photos. Heck, use Google Image Search and save yourself the money on reference photos. GL - the proportions are much better on this one. Lighting is still a little so-so, but handled better on this one (though the cross-hatching gets a little muddled... but that might be the resolution of the scan). He's got a bit of a case of 80s hair, but that's just picking nits. Good first art post. Keep it coming.

Thanks for your feedback. About the lighting and shadows: yep. Guilty as charged. That's one of my weaknesses (the other is background perspective) The Hair: Hahaha. pet-peeve. I admire the 80's way of drawing hair. I follow the "George Perez-style" of drawing hair. Here's another artwork I did in the past:

Great stuff, aesantos! Very strong on all the basics and good looking artwork. I agree with Onegemini that you could tighten up your work a bit and really deliver some amazing art. I say keep it up and post more soon.

Well, from the viewpoint of a fan (and non-talent, at least in the art department), these look pretty darn impressive!
I'm a fan of 80's Perez myself, so I'm particularly appreciative of your style. Well well done (especially the Nightwing). Is there a little Gil Kane in there, too, or is that my imagination?
We are looking for artists to contribute some interior work to our titles (though, if you ask me, your stuff is good enough for covers, as well)... Interested...?

She used to do anime-style stuff. I'll post some if I can find any.

I tried to channel some of Gil Kane's style, especially in the Kyle drawing. Though I love the dynamic style of th 90's, I just love the energy behind th classics. Sometimes, it makes me think I've been born in the wrong era. I'd love to contribute some of my artwork (be it interior or covers). Thanks once again. p.s. I'm interested in doing a Legion of Superheroes series if you will allow it. I have some ideas I'd like to share.

I'd love to view her work (Katt is a female, right?). I just thought of drawing Brainiac 5 that way to add some lgiht-hearted tone to his serious demeanor.

Here's a couple of Katt's pieces; A Batgirl drawing (inked by me); onegemini.com/temp/kattbatgirl.jpgAnd, a Supergirl pic (colored by me); onegemini.com/temp/kattsupergirl.jpgThat's all I got, because the rest is all hers, and I can't post it without her permission. She got out of illustration to get into poetry. Anyhoo, that's it. I will not encroach on your posting space any longer.

Oh, she's heavily influenced by Adam Warren. Turned me on to him. Funny enough, he lives within a hundred miles of me (not sure exactly where) and attended my art school for a time.

Of the new pieces, I'd say the Wonder Woman was the best, believe it or not.
The manga-ish one is good, but you overdid it with the lightning filter.
The Cyclops is cool, as the radial blur does give it a sense of motion.
The "Strange Attraction" piece is okay... but, it looks like exactly what you say it is. A piece with poser, and a bunch of Photoshop filters thrown at it. Note from a professional graphic artist; using a page curl is known as a sure sign of an amateur. You see it all over the web (along with the plastic wrap filter). People overuse it almost as much as they do lens flare (if it's not a photo, I don't use lens flare... and I try to avoid it when it is a photo).
You've proven with your hand drawn illustrations that you do have the raw talent, but this piece doesn't show it.
Photoshop and the like are great tools. They can add to an image. Just don't use them as a crutch, throwing them at an image until you arrive at something. Use them like surgical instruments.
You're showing a good interest in the digital stuff. Now you just gotta streamline the process, and you'll end up with some kicka$$ pieces.
Keep it up.

Awesome work!
I like what you've done here. Great conceptual pieces. I have no idea what the Cyclops pic is about but it looks cool. And the WW pic is pretty well put together all around. I'd love to see a color version!

I can't get the Supergirl pic to pull up. Weird. Comes right up for me. Try again. Might've been a bandwidth interruption.

If it doesn't stand out, or rather looks like it belongs in a pic, then I have no problem with it. Exactly... but more often than not, people don't use it right, or put multiple flares from different angles in one poorly colored pic. They don't really understand what it is, or how it's supposed to behave. Now, I admit, when I first got Photoshop, I was as guilty as sin in this. Lense-flares up the wazoo. Anyway... I hate being critical, but I'm practicing. I'm trying to get on the faculty of the Narrative Art school nearby, so I need to learn to critique without saying "you suck" and flaming.

I hate to do this (as this isn't mine or her thread) but since people are having trouble opening it; Note: The lens flare in this ISN'T a filter... I actually made it. The lens flare filter looked too real, in comparison to the image. So I made it graphic.

Thanks for the comments guys. ;D
The Wonder Woman pic is actually a Wondergirl/Supergirl thing (What costume will the "daughter of WW and Supes" take)
The manga-esque styles on the first two drawings (th WW and the manga girl were just my way of practicing the style...I can't just seem to get them right. Ugh.
The cyclops was for our Mythology lesson in Grade 7 (I used to teach grade 7)
The "Strange Attraction" was one of my first tries in using Photoshop before...I just love the flame background.
