I think I might sue you for facial reconstructive surgery, Joe, since that cover just made my jaw hit the floor.
Outstanding work, sir! I'll see you in court!

I just got done reading volume 2 of Stumptown by Greg Rucka and Matthew Southworth. I don't know if I like it more than volume 1 or not, but it's still a really great mystery/crime series: funny, intriguing, and as someone who lives in Portland, I appreciate the scenery. Go check it out if you have a chance.
Next up: Axe Cop, volume 3. We're in for a good time.

I've been reading the digital Red Sonja series by Gail Simone. It's a comic about an ass-kicking lady written by Gail Simone, so that should tell you everything you need to know about it and be incentive enough to buy it.

First thought: Really? "Luscious Fox"? REALLY? Sigh. I think I'd be more annoyed if I didn't actually laugh at it, so points to you.
Second thought: This needed an editor. Lotta typos here.
Actual thought: I liked this. I liked seeing the positives and negatives to seeing Barry become a hero, I liked the foreshadowing going on, and I like seeing the Rival as a villain. He's a guy who doesn't seem like he gets much play in the actual stories, but has a lot of potential. I'm interested to see what you do with him and how he and Barry interact with the Flash legacy. Also, that cover looks great.
Liked this story and looking forward to what comes next.

Awesome. I've always loved Greek Mythology but could never get into Wonder Woman comics, but this is easily readable for me. Great job. Thanks, Steve! To be honest, I was never into Wonder Woman for a good while either. I like the idea that one of the most recognizable superheroes in the world is a woman, but never actually read any of her stories. Then the New 52 happened and Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang wrote a story that's essentially Greek Mythology meets Game of Thrones. Not since peanut butter and chocolate has there been a more ingenious combination. Since then I've been a big fan of the Amazon Princess and I'm definitely going to include more Greek stuff in future stories. Thanks again for reading and commenting! -UDC

I and Alex (the editor behind Earth A) have been tinkering with an Earth A Suicide Squad title for a while now, but knowing me it's probably not likely to get off the ground any time soon, so consider that position open. Message Alex if you're interested, and maybe rope me in to ping-pong ideas or something.

This isn't how I would've ended the arc, but that's probably for the best, as this turned out really good. The characterization's were spot on, Riddler's multi-layer nightmare was a trippy and cool in a demented Christopher Nolan kind of way, and in a very unexpected twist, Emily Reese got a backstory, something I, as her creator, did not expect to happen. If I had any complaint (which I probably shouldn't, all things considered), it's that the story felt a bit rushed, but that can be forgiven as there's a lot of meat to it. Great stuff, looking forward to where Tec goes from here.

Interesting take on Jason Todd. I like the update of 'stealing hubcaps off the Batmobile' (if that's what you were going for), and I like his established resourcefulness. Jason's a different animal than Dick, and I appreciate that that comes through here. Nicely done.
If there's any complaint, it's probably the lack of action. I get the sense that something bigger's coming (especially considering the cliffhanger), but this one seemed a bit too quiet, if that makes any sense. Still, I like the characterization and I'm looking forward to seeing Jason's tenure as the Boy Wonder.

New 52?

I know. I'm a big Hickman booster, and the super-science of the F4 seems like a great sandbox for him to play in. I'll pick up the trades of FF and read them someday, but right now I'm backed up on reading stuff. Between Yahtzee Croshaw's new novel (It's called "Jam". It's about an apocalypse. With jam in it.), Marvel Comics: The Untold Story, and a few GN's I got for Christmas, plus the plays I'm going to have to read for my Script Analysis class, I've got enough reading to do for the next few months.

New 52?

Post by UltimateDC on Jan 25, 2013 16:11:35 GMT -5
I guess I should have asked about Marvel NOW also. Biggest major refocuses for both companies in quite some time. I like their cover treatments so far and the Fantastic Four stuff seems like something I'd dig. I'm having trouble parsing out all the Avenger and X-men books though. There are so many! NOW! is less of a reboot and more of a shake-up, with new creative teams on new old titles (they're #1's, but they'll go back to the old numbering systems eventually). It's been consistently better than the New 52 was when it kicked off. Without going into too much detail, here's the best so far: Avengers (Jonathan Hickman, Jerome Opena) - Hickman goes big in his stories, which makes him kind of perfect for an expanded Avengers team (upwards of 20 members to choose from). There's less of a character focus than Bendis's run, but the plotting looks like it's going somewhere good and I'm excited for it. Thor: God of Thunder (Jason Aaron, Esad Ribic) - I didn't read past the first issue, but I've heard a lot of good things about it and Aaron is my favorite writer in comics right now. All New X-Men (Brian Michael Bendis, Stuart Immonen) - This is a one of the most reliably great creative teams out there. Bendis has a fantastic handle on the X-Men and Immonen's artwork is soooooo bloody gorgeous it hurts. I knew this was going to be good, I just didn't expect it to be THIS good. Young Avengers (Kieron Gillan, Jamie McKelvie) - Yeah, we're one issue in. So what? Go read it. It's gonna be awesome. FF (Matt Fraction, Mike Allred) - Didn't follow any of the F4 stuff before now, and I can still dig it. Fraction's got a handle on the weird science and family dynamic of it, but the real hook is Allred, who is an absolute beast on artwork. I don't use this word often, but Saga is amazeballs. It's pure imagination in every book and it's an absolute blast. Also, Chew is pretty damn awesome. We're thirty one issues, but it's all in trades right now, so check that out if you get a chance. It's weird and funny and fun and weird and awesome. -UDC

New 52?

Right now, the best I'm reading are Batman, Wonder Woman, Earth 2, Justice League, Aquaman, and Animal Man. Demon Knights is on the fence because Paul Cornell left it. Swamp Thing's probably gonna get dropped after Snyder's done there.
Really, Marvel's doing a lot better with NOW! than the New 52. The Avengers books have been pretty damn good. Although I think Image is on top right now, with books like Chew, Manhattan Projects, and especially especially Saga. Seriously, I could talk about how good Saga is for hours.

Did Dr. Balewa turn into Dr. Mist part way through with no explanation, or am I missing something? I wasn't aware of the character of Dr. Mist (I'm admittedly ignorant of WW's solo stuff) and this threw me a little. This seems to be the only description of his alter ego: That may be my bad. Actually, probably is, since I'm the writer. Yes, Dr. Balewa is Dr. Mist, there wasn't any significant change except in what I called him. I thought I mentioned last issue that Dr. Mist was a nickname, but I probably could still have handled this better. Thank you, thank you. Thanks! We'll get more from Cheetah in future issues, I promise you that. Again, thanks for reading and commenting! -UDC

Interesting writing. Definitely a series a person could read every once in a while. Each issue should be a bit longer though. I LOVED the ending, it had a nice cliffhanger that'll leave the readers in suspense. Well, that's surprising. Truth be told, I wasn't terribly into that cliffhanger myself, but if it works, it works. I wasn't a big Wonder Woman fan either for a while, until the New 52 book. But now, thanks to Brian Azzarello, Cliff Chiang, and the rest of the team, I'm all about the Amazon Princess. Thanks for reading and thanks for commenting! -UDC

I liked this. This reminds me a lot of Grant Morrison's take on the Last Son of Krypton: a combination of fantastical sci-fi and down-to-earth morality. The various timelines seem kind of ambitious, but they come off well and make for a good portrait of Superman throughout the ages. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes. Keep it up.

Sorry it's taken me a while to read. Finals kept me busy.
Anyway, I dug it. I love the genuine corniness of Percy and Cyril's adventure and the contrast between the dour funeral scenes. I also like that this (I assume) is setting up a mystery as to who killed the old man, or at least some amount of drama to be had there.
If there's any complaint, it's that I get the feeling that I've seen this before. Now granted, I have read Paul Cornell's excellent Knight and Squire miniseries that I know you're pulling from, so I've seen the Knight's secret origin before. Still, not everyone has, and I suppose it's important for the uninitiated to know the story.
Fun times mixed with some pretty genuine emotion, plus a nice-looking cover. Great stuff, keep it up.

So some running thoughts, then a conclusion. I'm...not too sure what this means. Ares is reflecting that he's seen worse than silk, that he's done worse things than cover cave walls with silk, and it is his duty and pleasure to do worse things than cover cave walls with silk? I get the gist of what you want from this (that Ares likes doing terrible things, and that silk covering cave walls is weird), it's just really strangely phrased. Wow, I actually don't remember writing that line. Weird place for a character moment. She's got fun toys. Next issue we get another one! Diana's and Steve have a neat dynamic, and that's something I'm going to try to play with over the course of the series. Thanks for reading and thanks for commenting! -UDC

"Luscious Fox". I can only assume he payed his tuition at Gotham U by stripping on the weekends.
Good first issue, lots of emotion and tension. The Joker's written quite nicely, very unpredictable and dangerous but still engaging. Bruce comes off as kind of a dick (especially considering he gives Alfred the cold shoulder), but thinking about it, that's actually a good way of showing what happens to Batman when he doesn't have enough people in his life. It's like how on Doctor Who, they explain that the Doctor needs a companion to keep him grounded, despite the danger it puts these people in. Nice work.
If there's any criticism here, it's that the cliffhanger doesn't exactly work. I have a general idea of where it's going because I've talked to you about Earth A, but just leaving it with "Batman meets some kid" doesn't have the same punch to it, y'know?
Still, a good, gripping issue that makes me want to come back for the next one. Solid work, sir.
