Hard one.
Both are great characters. What are the dimensions of this contest, though? Is it, "Who would we want at our backs when the Sheet hits the fan?" (New Outsiders #18 tickled me more than I thought!) "Who's the better starship captain?", "wHo would beat whom in a fair fight?" or "Who do we just plain like better?"
Am I, perhaps, overthinking the question?
Given the above parameters, I'd say my choice is split about 50/50, but at the end of the day, if a Klingon (Original Series version, not Next Generation) was holding a disruptor to my head, I'd have to go with...
Kirk. He cheats.

Sisko trumps either one....and Doctor Who (pretty much any incarnation exept maybe Davison) trumps all the Trek captains put together.

I'll go with Kirk. The guy saved Earth in 6 movies. Plus the guy got laid by more alien female tail then anyone else in Starfleet. He has truly gone where no man has gone be for.

Picard. Sorry but he is who I grew up with as an avid child fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation. ive recently come to love Kirk over recent months though watching the old films and as cool a person as he is I prefer Picard as a captain and he's just the one I grew up with...I cant say much more. and Patrick Stewart is cool.....and so is Schatner....damn.
Picard.

It is almost too close to call...
On a related note: Shatner vs. Stewart? Not even close. Stewart. Hands down. Seven times a week, and twice on Sunday.

I never could do this choosing thing between them, because they're just such different characters, and from such different series, despite the branding. Both men seemed suited to the time periods (real world and Trek-wise) they were developed in.
I do kind of have to agree with the lateral choice of Sisko though. He impressed me with some of his choices, and how he forced himself to live with them, more than the other two.
Patrick Stewart as an actor? Oh man...yeah, he reigns supreme.
Take care Don

www.google.com/trends?q=captain+kirk%2C+captain+picard&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0Some of the responses are very intelligent and are based entirely on logic. *YAWN* Who do I want to see on my tv screen? KIRK! 'Nuff said. Would one of you guys tell me why Picard has an obvious british accent when he's supposed to be French? Isn't that where the acting bit comes into play? And what is with Dr. Who? I can't go anywhere without someone mentioning him. Explain.

Sisko trumps either one....and Doctor Who (pretty much any incarnation exept maybe Davison) trumps all the Trek captains put together. Here here! Notice no one's mentioned Janeway... let's keep it that way! Oh, wait... crap! But on a serious note, I just had this conversation with the friendly neighborhood comic-shop guy today. When I said Kirk, he said 'get out'. Then I said I'd been there longer and probably pay his salary and he said, 'Ok, you can stay, but you're still wrong.' Then I said, 'that's OK, because the original Star Wars Trilogy was better anyway.' Then the insults really started to fly!

Picard is better. I'm just putting it like this, if I was on board the enterprise and I had to put my life in the hands of either of those two guys, why on earth would I choose Kirk? That dude's a walking disaster who is either too big of a glory hog to send more qualified people on missions or doesn't trust the rest of his crew to do what they are hired for. How many red shirts have to die until people someone in charge in the federation takes notice of his complete and utter ineptitude. Picard on the other hand thinks things through, he's an idea man that uses his resources in the most efficient ways possible. Kirk? McCoy and Spock you two are with me and the rest of you wait here with Scotty while he fixes he problem. Psh.

I will respond to your PREPOSTEROUS post Ramon, even I know you're just baiting me with ludicrous accusations. Kirk always went with the landing parties because he WAS the best man for the job. The crew is hired to run the SHIP and part of Kirk's job is being an ambassador for the Federation. Most of the missions were ones where diplomacy was essential to success and we all know Kirk is a master with people. He's a natural leader. He knows how to get the job done. Sometimes people die. It's a dangerous universe, dude.

it was still dangerous when Picard was in charge he was just better suited for the job apparently since under his command the federation didn't loose quite so many men. Kirk was just a hot head who couldn't stand not getting some kind of perverse adrenaline rush out of being in charge. You'd think getting all that "alien tail" would have violated the prime directive too, wouldn't you?
and I wasn't bating you, that's my honest opinion.

Sisko and Picard are tied in my opinion... Kirk's good, and he's a canadian but I'll still say Picard is better. Sisko though, come on he punched Q in the face! That single moment makes him more badass than any other Star Trek captain out there. I didn't mind Voyager, but it just didn't have the same appeal as DS9, TNG, or the original... Enterprise sucked...

But mrclown, if Kirk met Q what do you think he would have done? He wouldn't have taken the crap Picard did that's for sure. LOL. A few of my favorites from 100 reasons why Kirk>Picard. 13. Kirk can infiltrate Gangsters, Nazis, and even the Pentagon -- easily. 22. The Klingons didn't have a word for surrender -- until they met Kirk. 30. Kirk's name is hated throughout the galaxy. 49. The extent of Kirk's knowledge of Klingon vocabulary can be roughly translated as "GO F*CK YOURSELF." 60. Kirk never once said "Abandon ship! All hands abandon ship!" 73. Kirk can beat a Vulcan at Chess. 72. When Kirk was Picard's age, he retired from Admiral and took to climbing rocks. 71. When Picard was 37, he was only Captain of the lowly freighter, Stargazer. When Kirk was 37, he was Captain of the flagship Enterprise. 86. Kirk would never sing to children in a crisis. 90. Kirk would personally throw Wesley off his bridge. as for actors, one line says it all:

True, Kirk probably would have tried taking a swing at Q... And he is a fellow Canadian... Meh, I still like Picard and Sisko more though. How about this though: They each have a ship of the same model, same equipment, everything. It's their standard crew that they always have (Worf is chief of security, not Tasha though) Who takes it?

uh oh, we have a tie! Kirk is probably COOLER then Picard, but he's in NO way a better Captain. AND... Picard had a cooler uniform, hands down.

The easiest way for aliens to be to have some alien chick give a STD. That would be the death of Kirk.
Kirk blow up the Enterprise.
Riker crashed the Enterprise.
So who is better on that bridge?
Hell Khan kicked his ass.

The easiest way for aliens to be to have some alien chick give a STD. That would be the death of Kirk. It's a couple hundred years into the future. I would hope advances in the prevention of STD's would occur. By then condoms would be so primitive. Hell Khan kicked his ass.LOL! Khan kicked Kirk's ass? WHAT? Don't forget that Khan is also a genetically enhanced human who lost to Kirk TWICE in that movie. Kirk blow up the Enterprise. Riker crashed the Enterprise. So who is better on that bridge? Are you comparing Riker's crash to Kirk's destroying the ship? The ship was toast in both cases. If there was any other alternative to destroying the ship, Kirk would have found it. He was faced with an impossible decision, once again, and I think his solution showed his trademark cunning, once again. He lost the ship but saved Spock and Saavik's lives. What's more important? Plus he made the Klingons look RIDICULOUS. Kirk: My God Bones, what have I done? McCoy: What you had to do. What you always do...turn death into a fighting chance to live. Ramon, see reason number 75. Kirk never once stood up and had to straighten his shirt. You can't really base it on one ship vs another ship because Picard's enterprise is superior. That's like pitting Red Baron against a P-51 Mustang. Let's just keep it simple. Who do you LIKE better? ;D

Remember that engineered diseases can be fatal.
But all the captains of every show was unique and brought something different to the table.
They were the best in their respective corner of the Star Trek mythos.

Lots of good points brought up here. But as Quester said, I've gotta vote for the guy that I grew up watching and that was Picard. Never could get into the original series, myself. And I always prefered Picard's style of captaining over Kirk's. I mean, Captains aren't supposed to go running off into danger, risking their own lives. If they get killed then the crew's without a leader. Although, I always thought Riker would make a fine captain too. Hey cool, I broke the tie!

I didn't grow up with Picard, so maybe that's why this is such an easy decision. Truthfully, Kirk would never fit into TNG and Picard would never survive in TOS. Charlie all you have to ask yourself is, who do you like better? Space cowboys or Space mediators. Keep in mind, this decision could affect your entire future...No pressure.
