So, who's work will you buy even if the story is bad? Which one of these talented fellows makes the writer look better than he is?
Feel free to nominate a candidate of your own!

Personally, I have a couple of favorites on this list (and a few I left off--- the Dodsons, Michael Turner, George Perez, Patrick Gleason), but when it comes right down to it, I will buy whatever comic book Alex Ross is working on. For my money, Justice is the best comic in the world right now!
But then again, I also have a Super Friends obssession (Meanwhile, at the Hall of Justice...")!

Out of the list that you presented I, too, would have gone with Alex Ross. I can't get enough of his stuff. However, I did go with fill in the blank because my artist hero is, has been, and always will be, George Perez.

Ack, practically a tie between J.H. Williams III and J.G. Jones.

I've always thought well of Jim Aparo, Phil Jiminez, George Perez, Tom Grummett, and Tom Lyle.
But right now I'm fond of our own Craig Cermak, whose stylings put me in mind of the Silver Age; and Bill Walko of Titans Tower, from whom I have two comission pieces on my wall. Bill's style is more cartoon-realistic if that makes sense. I would ask him to come here, but he is busy, he draws at a slower pace, and his comission rates are a bit higher. Which is not to say I won't comission him again in future....just not for a while.

I'm going to have to go with Turner instead of Ross. I find Ross's covers to be more like pin-ups than actual comic book covers.

When i was in like... kindergarten I remember watching the X men cartoon so inadvertantly i would buy books and video cassettes and even the occasional comic book or action figure with guess who's art on it? So that might just be one of those things like, i grew up seeing Jim Lee art all over the place and I just can't get over how freaking cool it looks. It may not be perfect but there you have it, to me Jim Lee is like the modern day Neal Adams where his Batman is used all over the place and even when superman came out, it was his on the displays so for my money Jim Lee right now without a question. My runners up are of course Mr. Van Sciver if he's on the right story because his art doesn't fit everywhere but with big epic feeling stories he is the best. I also like Carlos Pacheco a bunch because it's borderline cartoony and i love that look. I was big into Ross for a little bit but for reason's i can't explain I just don't get the same kick. Justice is okay, I'll probably buy it when it comes out as one tpb... so like in seven years. Oh DARWYN COOKE! That dude is a madman, I buy his comics just for how purty they are sometimes. I like Hester and Parks, I just wished they'd have not went over to Marvel. Tim Sale too, for a bit I was just checking out every one of those team ups with what's his face... the guy who wrote Teen Wolf... you all know who I mean... Oh and Scott McDaniels too because that dude rules, just seems like his GA stuff isn't being colored well... on the covers anyways. yep... i should end this now.

Growing up reading some Captain America issues back in 1988 or so, Kieron Dwyer was the I believe the cover artist or the series artist. Looking at his work made me want to draw super heroes. Then in the nineties it was Image creators. I think Rob Liefeld and Jim Lee were my biggest influences. And still to this day I'll buy anything that either one have done.
My current artists that I look forward to monthly is Ed Benes on Justice League of America. But I also love E-Bas from Top Cow and Jim Cheung from Marvel's Illuminati limited series.
I don't think I'll be getting anything that is drawn by Steve McNiven.

Turner is best for his poses and his scantly clad women (nothing wrong with that). I like his single images. Hell I got several posters by him.

John Romita Jr. Where is the Romita love? One of the best artists of this generation and the natural successor to Jack Kirby.
Liefield nicknamed himself "The King", did you know that?
I screamed at the computer.
But John Romita Jr, totally.

Totally. His Batman/Punisher crossover rocked so hard. His Joker was TERRIFYING. Better than whatever computer generated crap they delivered in Batman recently...

I love the work of Darwyn Cooke... I'd like to see him do an issue or two of Green Lantern!
I do like Alex Ross's work, but I have to say it doesn't translate (for me, at least) very well into comic book interior art. In my humble opinion it's a total censory overload. Too much of a good thing and it becomes distracting to the story. That being said, I'm also notorious for reading books with horrible art simply because I like the story. So maybe I shouldn't vote...

i get what you're saying with alex ross, i just had this discussion with borize not too long ago... in fact maybe yesterday, and we were saying how it's just too much at once and it almost begins to feel stiff. Don't get me wrong when i see his amazing covers i am usually blown away but aside from marvels and k.c where it felt right i don't think it needs to be done... that being said i don't think it works for justice where it's an older feeling story and kinda calls for a more darwynian (cooke) approach. oh and i agree with cooke on gl, even when he did the one shot thing for secret files i wished he would be on the regular title.

I'm not much of an artist myself, but I have my favorites:
- George Perez The man has earned his legendary status. He's drawn most of Marvel and DC's major superheroes at one point. His art to me is what a comic book should look like. And you should see his rendition of Scarlet Witch during his last run on Avengers.
- Neal Adams I'm an ols school guy, and I love the old GL/GA social commentary run. Adams' art is very realistic, almost like Alex Ross without the paint. BTW, did you know Adams is a supporter of the "Hollow Earth" theory?
- Alex Ross It always amazed me how he does his stuff in paint. I never was allowed paint as a kid, so I envy him for getting paid to use it.
- Tom Grummett I love his art during the Death, World Without, and Return of Superman storylines. Him and Perez to me are what comics should look like.
- John Byrne Okay, he's loud, opininated, and a pain these days, and I loke cracking jokes about John Byrne like Mick Foley likes cracking jokes about Al Snow, but back in the 70s and 80s, he was at his best. West Coast Avengers, X-Men, Superman, Fantastic Four, he showed his chops as an artist and writer.
- Jack Kirby Obvious.
To me, DC has always been about the artists, while Marvel has had writers.

Oooh... IMO, I disagree with that. I do think DC has the better artists, but Marvel havinig better writers? I don't know... I've tried for so many years to get into the Marvel U and I just find so much of the writing just blah. I mean they have JMS writing Spider-Man and I couldn't care less! They have Loeb now, who just writes himself into corners left and right... Chris Claremont who's time is LONG since past.
I will, however, always read Bendis & Whedon.
USM has been enjoyable since day one, and even in the story arcs that seem way too drawn out and aimless, they still pull together in the end. I am glad Bagley's leaving though... time for some fresh pencils.
Whedon could write anything and I'd enjoy it. He made me care about the comic book X-Men again (something I thought couldn't happen).
DC though... I just love it all mostly!

Here is my two-cent again. Both DC and Marvel have there strength and weakness. Not many people liked the Bruce Jones run on Nightwing, but loved his run on the Hulk. Greg Pak has been kicking butt with Hulk. I have enjoyed JMS run on Amazing Spider-Man, but I picked it up at the start of the Iron Spider storyline and will stop collecting it after JMS leaves. I still enjoy Chris Claremont on New Excalibur. But wait I believe that this belongs in another thread.
This thread is about the artists not writers. DC has Jim Lee, George Perez, the Kuberts(for whatever that is worth), Pete Wood, Adam Hughes, Ed Benes, Joe Bennett and Justiniano (one of my favorite artists), Jock, and Wildstorm Artists.
Marvel has Dave Finch, Frank Cho, Oliver Coipel, Steve McNiven, Ed McGuiness, J. Scott Campbell, Joe Mad, Bryan Hitch (when he finishes Ultimate 2), Mike Deodato, Billy Tan, Leinil Li, Marko Djurdjevic, Aspen Artists and top Cow Artists.
From the looks like Marvel has a deeper art bullpen then DC.

I am a sucker for realistic artists who work on comic books, so I have to go with JG Jones (got on to him when he wrote with Mark Millar on Wanted) and Bryan Hitch (fell in love with his art on Ultimates with Mark Millar). I also like McNiven and Dale Eaglesham almost as much because they're both tremendous artists. Alex Ross is almost always up there as well. I know there's more, but I can't think now.
Funny...half of the artists I listed have work with Mark Millar. I like that guy. I need to go to the other thread!

totally disagree but then again it's all subjective, isn't it. But which company has the most consective group of artists that produce monthly on one title for more than six months? That my dear Brigante133 is truly the riddle. Or is it that Marvel promtes its artists more with books like Marvel Young Guns? Mischief

well imo, it has nothing to do with quantity but quality. and whenever i open a marvel book it is so caught up in trying to be either photorealistic or feaux anime... one or the other and nothing else.
so my dear mis'drag, if you prefer mass quantities of cookie cutter art, far be it for me to try and sway your opinion.

Well the Kubert brothers moved over to DC... Isn't that a HUGE example of how Marvel's artists, no matter how good they are, will never compare to DCs?

I've been enjoying Perez's work recently. I like the style of Frank Cho, but his women look too similar.
But I gotta put a vote in for Justiniano (Days of Vengence, the Creeper). I really dig his dark style. It's so vastly different than my style, he always surprises me with artistic choice that I would have never imagined. I'm looking forwards to his version of Doctor Fate.
So I guess I really mean "other".

Oliver Coipel, Ed McGuiness, J. Scott Campbell, Gabriel Dell'Otto, and Barry Kitson. But since when has DC's art squad been able to put Marvel's art bullpen to shame? Very few and far between.
