Of the three main Superman titles, who do you think is doing him the best right now? For me, it's hand's down, Gail Simone. I think Superman has been taken for granted a little this year, used more as a plot device than a character, but Gail's recent run on Action has been a breath of fresh air. I can't wait until his showdown with Black Adam (another character she does very well)!

Simone. That's the only reason I'm currently reading the title. Though I will say that I enjoyed Rucka's handling during the Sacrifice Arc.

Really? See, I think Rucka (while an excellent writer and perfect for the other titles he's on) is the one responsible for the use of Superman as a plot device. I know he's one of the prime directors at DC now, but I just don't think he knows what to do with Superman--- I think he sees him as a pawn to move across the board until he's in position for the endgame (Infinite Crisis). I mean, the difference between him and Gail, as I see it, is Rucka gives good plot (though I suppose, that's debateable, as well) and Simone gives good character. That being said, I do think the plot of Sacrifice was good (if a little predictable), and that he is doing good work on OMAC and WW.

I just found myself looking at the art and thinking Twins Separated at Birth: Jimmy Olson... and Alfred E. Newman?

I don't like current Superman continuity.
I mean... I've liked the last couple of issues i've picked up...
But it's all too convoluted.... tie ins pop up into stories, and arcs which flow through the titles just.... they feel tacked on...
thoughts?

Everyone should pick up the latest issue of Action Comics. It's a stand-alone story, and another expertly crafted gem by Ms. Simone. A very cinematic Hallowe'en story, with perhaps the best characterization of the Spectre since the Crisis began (Hell, since before the days of Hal, even!). Truly, a spooky figure here.
Can't say I'm such a big fan of John Byrne, though...

I don't know about you guys, but I'm really looking forward to All Star Superman. Grant Morrison is awesome and I think Frank Quitely's an awesome artist. Unfortunately, when I met Mr. Quitely at the Canadian National Comicon at the end of August, he said that in the 6 months that he had already been working on All Star Supes, he had finished 1 full issue and 3 pages. That means that their run should end sometime next decade....

I hadn't picked up a Superman title in years, until the VU crossover with Black Adam. Gail Simone really out did herself with writing Black Adam. The way B.A. ended the fight was clever and accurate. Both he and Supes were dead on, and by the end of the issue, I was hoping B.A. would become a regular Supes villain.
(Course I change my opinion about BA becoming a regular when I heard GS was leaving the title).

Here is what I do not get.DC comics broke up a awsome team of Gail Simone and Ed Benes on Birds Of Prey. They both started Superman titles at the sametime. Why didn't they keep them togather on a Superman title? It be exciting for the fans and profitable for DC comics.

Re: the identity of Ruin Kinda thought it was him...! It's about time they wrapped up this storyline, though this was a particualrly good issue (the one with Mxy and Ruin)--- there is such a sense of impending doom running through all the Superman titles right now, and this one was very unsettling. One of Rucka's best.

Does anyone else really love All Star Superman? Or even not like it at all I suppose? Let me know. I thought it was very well done, but it felt too much like an alternate-universe tale--- not that there's anything wrong with that! I trust Grant Morrison to deliver a great story, full of WTF?!? moments. And the art is good (though, imho, overrated)... All in all, definately better than All-Star Batman!
