Jeph Loeb has a great grasp of the characters he writes, and I care not for the person, but the stories he produces... I think if he was a crap writer and a crap person then he shouldn't be in comics... Like John Byrne. He had his day, used it, abused it, and sticks around still. I like his style but it just gets on my nerves now... Well... his writing has become crap (You have been reading Batman/Superman & Supergirl, right?). A man that truly takes himself too seriously.

I know JB takes himself too seriously, and thinks himself a greater intellectual than he really is (plus he might be a slight misogynistic). The guy still can produce some increadible artwork, and he's one of the fastest artists working today(currently pencelling three comics and writing two). His best times might be behind him, he might be overrated, but he gets way too much sh!t thrown at him. Cut this guy some slack already!

Wow. That is always a great question whenever asked. But its always so hard to pick just one, so I will pick 5 out of my top 25. They don't always seem to be in the same order but off the top of my head today would be: Sandman Doom Patrol (Morrison run) Shade the Changing Man Strangers in Paradise Starman Suicide Squad See, even my top five isn't big enough off the top of my sharp head! This is the same thread that i wrote this in a month and a half ago right? Or maybe I accidentally hit a link to the DC message boards?

And his artwork has a certain quality to it. Do I enjoy it? No. But that is my perogative. In my opinion, his re-invention of the Superman mythos was his greatest achievement. I look at his artwork now & all I see is someone who's dynamic is past it's prime. Unlike Perez, who for some reason's artwork still holds up to this day... both new & old. All that being said, and being a mediocre artist myself, I still respect the man's ability. I don't however, respect his need to belittle & disrespect the people he writes & draws for. Simply put, he doesn't need to be an ass. Which he has been to several people I know, myself included. Jeph Loeb is going the same route. Geoff John's on the other hand, is one of the coolest guys you can hang with. Alright... enough of my rant.

I like Jeph Loeb. I once had a brief e-mail exchange with him and he was super nice. His more serious work speaks for itself I think, but I do think it was time for him to take a break from DC for awhile. His Superman family of books (Superman, Supergirl, Superman/Batman) have always been his go nuts books. I thought he kept a nice balance in the Superman run but has gotten a little over-the-top in Superman/Batman. Too many characters and too much craziness. I've gotten lost on what was going on in the book a few times. I have to wonder after reading Moore's SUPREME run (amazing stuff, btw), and considering that Loeb was getting his foot in the door working with Liefeld during that time period, if Loeb is trying to emulate Moore's 'make all the kooky stuff work' approach. Under Loeb's stay we've seen him usher back in most of the Silver Age elements of the Super mythos and try to bring a fun atmosphere back to the character, but I just don't think he's been as successful as Moore was. As for John Byrne, I really, really admired the man for a long time. To a kid in the 80s it was either Byrne or Perez as the top artists and the ones you would follow from book to book. But I do think his work has changed significantly. Most artists change over time, some for the better and some for the worse. I have my opinions over how Byrne's work has changed, but the main difference now in how I feel about the artist, and his work, has been changed, as Lantern Lad talked about, by his online presence. I was very anxious to see his Doom Patrol after having picked up his work here and there for a number of years, so I started hanging around the Doom Patrol forum on the DC Boards and on the John Byrne forum. I was genuine shocked and offended by some of the behavior I saw there by both Mr. Byrne and group that had grown up around him. I try to keep a person and their work seperate (and really rarely have a chance to see much of online pros outside the few who get involved), but after seeing a more personal side of this artist and also being really disappointed by his Doom Patrol effort, I made a conscious decision to stay away from his work for awhile. And this was before the whole Christopher Reeve brouhaha. I honestly think Byrne has brought a lot of this low-level animosity on himself. And after seeing how often it comes up and how public it can be, one has to wonder if Mr. Byrne doesn't in some way encourage all of this attention. I'm not saying that I can't enjoy his work again some day and fully respect others who can still appreciate the positive things he is doing, but at the time I personally felt as if I had lost a hero.

Ostrander's Suicide Squad is my number 1 ever. I also have really enjoyed Sandman Mystery Theater and Watchmen. I enjoy seeing the underlying messages and the development of imperfect characters.

Well I am glad to find someone else who loves the John Ostrander Suicide Squad. Check back soon for the debut of the DC2 Suicide Squad. I wouldn't dare to say it will be as good as the original, but I hope its enjoyable! I have had a lot of fun researching and working on the first two story arcs!

wow, I am glad somebody mentioned Starman!! Robinson's take on that character is possibly one of the greatest revamps of ANY character!! Everybody had their own voice, sounded like real people, and the drama was HIGH...you never knew what was gonna happen...and the art was awesome as well. Having said that, I think Robinson's Golden Age is one of my favorite reads EVER. I am only 28, but I have always loved the golden age DC (I started buying Young All Stars, All Star Squadron, Infinity Inc,and of course JSA reprints, outta dollar bins when I was like 12.) That book just chnaged my world, and still has one of the ALL TIME BEST fight sequences...you felt every blow. Maybe it's unfair because I work in a comic store, but I get to read so many books I sometimes forget what I love...but there is so many great books, a lot of which aren't super hero stuff....in fact, my all time favorite comics are Jimmy Corrigan (And all Acme Novelty Library) and David Boring (and all of eightball as well.) Whedon's Astonishing is truly a gift, Ultimates is so much fun, Wanted was great. All time though...Byrne's Fantastic Four was really great (YES, I know...he is a hack today...) Mr. Miracle (which I have an almost complete run of...jealous? ) Watchmen (Of course) Nexus Madman I am forgetting so many...

God, I used to re-read those issues all the time...including their start in Legends when Brimstone kills Blockbuster (who I loved from early Batman and Brave & the Bold) and man...Bronze Tiger, Deadshot, Capt. Boomerang...I couldn't get enough of it...it was just the coolest idea... I just recently re-designed a bunch of them, for a elseworlds-style thing...it was one of my favorite things I have ever done...maybe I will post them up here...

I'm still attempting to track down the Legends mini, Deadshot mini, and issues #34-#66. I had the unfortunate luck of being born in the wrong decade.

Have you tried EBay? The cult hit status of the Suicide Squad hasn't jacked the price up too much over the years! You should be able to find all the books you are looking for there.

I would have to say Birds of Prey is my favourite comic of all time (besides anything that has Cheshire in it ;D). It's the combination of female power and writing that draws me too it. There are quit a few series with female roles but I feel that this one shines through. Each woman has her own style and her own outlook on life and that in its self is exciting!

I tracked down Deathstroke 41 tonight and it was awesome. I great addition to any Deadshot or Suicide Squad fans collection. Deathstroke gets punked about 6 times in the chest by Deadshot. ;D To bad he discovers he's immortal in issue 42.
